I think that salvage yard is a few miles east of Colorado Springs--it looks similar to one I bought a car out of about a year ago--one guy has a couple of thousand cars there, just off the U.S. highway (46?) east of CO. Springs. It looks like Pike's Peak in the distance. Nice, dry, high desert climate east of the mountains. The only danger is grass fire, and this place had experienced a grass fire which destroyed a few of the cars, but most were still untouched. All makes and models, heavy on 1940s and 1950s cars.

Seeing that Mercury two door wagon converted to a truck reminds me of one my grandfather bought when I was 15 or 16. It was very clean and white. I think it came from Montana or one of the Dakotas. We got it with a bad engine. We had a good running '57 Ford 312 complete and rusty car so we plunged right in.

While lifting the engine out the Merc shift cable was still attached. It was push button in the steering wheel. My grandfather braced the cable against the frame and whacked it with a hammer until it broke loose.

Once the 312 was sitting in place of the 368 we found the driveshafts were different. He cut both in half with a torch and found a piece of tube to slide inside and adjust the length. Then he told me the secret. You blow bolt holes with the torch at 90 degree angles to keep the balance. The a "real" mechanic came down and put the Ford steering column in so we could hook up a shifter. The nice white car with a clean interior was looking pretty nasty by this time, both inside and out.

My Dad worked there part time and was pretty good about coaching me away from the error of his step father's ways. Years later I did modify a driveshaft- in a lathe and using a welder.

It is fun to get those memory jogs.

Been there twice. Duane is a very nice guy. Spent quite some hours there. The first time was the Sunday after the BCA Nats in 2009. Unfortunately I could only buy a few items due to the weight limits for suit cases and the trunk of my 71 Electra was already full with parts.

You and I both love the mid 70's Buicks. Were any of those for sale as whole cars, project cars? I see what appears to be a white 71-72 2 door Limited and, more interestingly, a white 74-76 Riviera. I ....want.....them.

This yard was my first introduction to the American junkyard two months ago.I loved it. Duane is a really nice guy and I ended up out there a couple of times.

I could not help but notice the 60 Oldsmobile professional car. Wow! First time I ever saw one of those. Nice body work at the taillight area. You would not find that type of body work today.

@ Bryan: I remember clearly Duane mentioned numerous offers for his cars, but due to the fact he wasn't sure about the intentions of the potential buyers (derbies) he hardly sold cars.

In one of the photos you can see a clamshell wagon with heated tail gate window glass (in stead of the already rare blower); would have loved to take it with me to install in my Estate Wagon.

Have you found a place that makes replacement seals for the tailgate? I have a '71 Pontiac clamshell and the rubbers is non-existent.

I'm lucky to have a wagon with perfect seals, so I haven't been activily searching for them. There are a few threads on www.stationwagonsforum.com, but I'm sure you've already checked them out (I'm 'Harry Clamshell' over there).

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I have checked at the wagon forum and all of the leads have turned up dead ends except for Karr Rubber, who I haven't been able to get to answer the phone. I read on some other forums that Karr rubber has some issues with quality, so I'm not to sure about using them.

That's a really nice looking wagon. She must have been very well cared for.

Ben,

Duane was one of the people I asked about that ' truck' / ' flower car' , but he also didn't know anything about the car unfortunately.

Thanks, Rob, just still dreaming. I have contemplated making my Super into a truck, but can't make my self do the first cut. Need to sell it before I do something stupid.
