Multi-disc clutch question

Well I got the clutch out of the flywheel on this 1923 REO Truck and I encountered something odd.

After I pulled the clutch discs out I saw there was another disc that was at the bottom of the clutch cavity.

It came out separately. Is there supposed to be one down in the bottom like this? Or are they all supposed to be together?

Here's another view of the clutch assembly, showing the ring on the end.

Any advice is welcomed as I'm working in uncharted territory for me.

Well, when my brother worked as a mechanic for a Pontiac dealer, they all had to go down to unload the new cars, as all too often some of the parts'd be in the back seat or trunk; some they had to truck to the dealers shop to "assemble"...maybe the Reo line was rushed and one dropped in and was just left...

Seriously, sounds like a question for the Reo forum here or for the Reo club (reoclub.org??).

Is the Id of the driver plate( photo #2 ) larger than the od of the retainer on the hub ?

If so I would suspect everything is ok.

Ken, I'll measure that one tonight and post back here. And I bought that manual a few months ago and unfortunately it only has about 25 pages relevant to my truck.

Ken, The driver plate in pic #2 has the same dimensions as the others. I have documenting all the pieces with pictures like this:

This was taken after I cleaned all the grease and oil off of it.

Even after a few days drying they still smell a little like gas.

Here is the clutch drive roller bearing with dimensions. It goes up inside the clutch pack hub and it has the number 2407 stamped on it which, so far, doesn't cross to anything. I wonder if I could find a sealed permanently lubed bearing to replace this with.

Still looking for that or the regular type as shown in the pic. What's a good source for bearing like this?

If I remember correctly there was one disc in my Hupp clutch that went in by itself. That really does not answer your question though , sorry . Looks like a Hyatt roller bearing, I've had very good luck consulting with a bearing specialty company. Are you quite sure it needs replacing?

I must confess not an expert , but went thru some problems with my multiple disc clutch, kind of a no-man's land, just tryin' to help a bit. A real bummer not much info in that book.Have you tried any antique truck forums?

Well I have learned a lot in the last few days, and my thanks to many friendly experts.

First the mystery of the separate friction disc that seemed to be by itself. I was confused why the retainer ring didn't hold it on the hub. The fact is that it's not designed to. It will only hold back the metal discs, the friction discs can slide right over it and the only one that could is the last one closest to the flywheel. This is why it seemed to be by itself. It just happened to be stuck on the flywheel by grease. The sequence should be a friction disc at the beginning and end of the pack with metal discs between each. I had two friction discs back to back so the order was slightly off. Other than the discs being greasy, that's the only issues I have found wrong.

I very much appreciate the input and advice from all who have posted on this thread.

Usually a studied look at any mechanism, a careful thinking of the design logic behind the assembly, and a close examination of witness marks will answer quite a few of the questions about it. Glad it worked that way for you..................Bob
