Engine Paint

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of overhauling the engine on my '55 Century. About a year ago someone on this forum stated that the power steering pully and the fan pully were not painted black, but instead a silver or cadmium. I tried to find that post but couldn't. What is the correct color for those pullys? Thanks.

Willie, I am not sure what you mean by "crank pulleys that are bolted to the engine color balancer." And you may not be able to answer this, but why were they painted cadmium rather than black? Just to add bling or was there some other reason?

Probably plated cad as part of the production of those and the other pulleys. The other answer is: "because Buick made it the way".

Silvery cad-like paint, plating or powder coat will work. Also the finish on the crank pulleys that are bolted to the engine color balancer.

Willie

A another option for finish is bead blast and clear coat with semi gloss. IMO that looks much more "natural" than paint................Bob

The power steering pulley is silver cadmium plated not painted. The fan pulley was the color of the engine which is NOT the apple green from a can that is being pasted off as the "real" buick GM NOS color. It is instead an acqua blue. Hope this sets things straight.

They were plated not painted and.....Because they were Buicks and not Fords or Chev's.

I'm pretty sure Willie meant the pulley bolted to the crankshaft balancer. If I read it right, the balancer bolted to the crank would be the engine color, and the pulley(s) bolted to the balancer would be cad plated.

JohnD: I agree, that is what I think Willie meant too. Thanks for the clarification.

On another point, I have several pictures of '55 Century engines and about half of them paint the generator bracket black, the other half paint it engine color. (This is the bracket that you use to tighten the fan belt). Any thoughts on this?

Nope, the fan pulley is cad silver color as is the spacer...the fan is black.

The generator bracket for tightening the fan belt is black.

My website should be back up and some examples. I can take pictures (out of town now).

Yes it is a fact that it is silver cad plated for the bracket holding the bottle as are the spring wire and hose mounts on the fender wall. It also appears the jar lid has a very fine metallic silver coating applied and does not show to be silver cad plating but perhaps a very fine silver metallic and thinly coated baked enamel.
