Guest BJM
My convertible needs a new top and new paint. I took it to the local restoration shop and they quoted $7500 for a paint job. This includes everything. Obviously, I won't be doing that and will have to prep and paint myself. BUT the convertible top is different. In Des Moines they have a company called IOWA AUTO TOP and they do most of the nice show quality convertible tops around here. I would like to use them but supply the top or do I just hand the convertible over to them and let them install ?
Guest Mc_Reatta
You ultimately need to ask the shop if they will install a new top you provide or not. I would expect they will as this re-leaves them of the any responsibility of getting the correct top for the car and the one you want and shifts it to you. They can tell you what the top and labor charges will be if they procure the top and install, and what the labor cost alone would be if you supply the top. Then you can make an informed decision. You will probably have more control and save a little money if you get the top and then arrange installation, but maybe not.
Bushwack
I think Steve mentioned a few months ago it cost about $6,000 for him to repaint a coupe (w/ soda blasting). Taking aside any body damage you may have to take care of, *I* would think an exceptional paint job would cost 1/3 that price most anywhere in the country (California, Texas and Florida excluded). As for the top, installed it should cost about $1,400 (or less) for a cloth top (vinyl a bit less). There are a couple people on-line that sell tops as distributors for EZ ON TOPS. You can always order from one of them and have your local shop do the installation (or have your shop order the top from EZ ON and...)
