Guest KERTWOOD
I am new here and I see that there is a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum. So hopefully someone can help me out! I have a big problem, I am currently restoring a set of 62 Starfire bucket seats that have the 2-way driver power seat track. I bought the seats with the track taken apart already but I "THINK" I have all the pieces. I can't figure out how the rod that the seat transmission rides on connects to the seat track mount without spinning? It seems pretty straight forward but it's not. I know this is a crazy question but if anybody has this particular drivers power 2-way track it would greatly be appreciated if they could post some up close detailed pics of the track and linkage or shoot me in the right direction. Below I have posted some pics to let everyone get a visual of the problem. Here is a picture of the complete set up. Here is a picture of the problem I am having. I cant figure out how to get the rear of the rod and mount together with out the rod spinning. Thanks in advance. Guest KERTWOOD
I just ran across some info. Any OLD'S and CADILLAC 2-way electric seat had the same setup from 59-69. Here is the only pic I found while searching the web. It gives me some sort of reference to the rod gear assembly but not quite detailed enough. The picture came from this forum back in 2009. Somebody's got to have a gm 2-way seat in there car on here that could help. Edited October 16, 2012 by KERTWOOD (see edit history)
TexRiv_63
Not sure if I understand your question but looking at your first pic you appear to be missing the drive cable that goes between the motor and the drive nut. If you look at your last pic from the web that is the piece that looks like a speedometer cable, nothing will work without it. You need a 62 shop manual which will have pictures that shouls answer any other questions. I just cleaned up my 63 seat mechanism but it is a 4-way tilt, here are some pics, I assume the back and forth mechanism would be similar to yours. Good luck. Guest KERTWOOD
Thanks for the reply. I have the small black drive cable its just not shown in the picture I posted. Sorry for not describing the problem so clearly. The red circle in the picture below is where I have the problem. I think I am missing a few small pieces that connect the drive gear ( long threaded rod ) to the mount shown below. Other than that, all the pieces are present ( just not shown in pic ). From the picture I pulled off of the internet, it looks like there is two white washers/bushings? missing. If anybody has a seat track like the ones in the pictures above and wants to sell. Let me know. Edited October 16, 2012 by KERTWOOD (see edit history)
Guest KERTWOOD
Well, PROBLEM SOLVED! I just ran across and purchased a 4-way drivers power bucket seat assembly and another 2-way passenger power bucket seat assembly that were both in a 63 Riviera. Also, It seems I am not missing any parts from the looks of the picture sent of the 2-way track. I just have to assemble the one I already have using the Riviera set as a reference when they arrive. Now, my problem is, do I want both buckets power after I restore the set or just go with only the drivers side? I hope this thread will be able to help someone else out in the future when dealing with a similar problem. Shop Rat
Might depend on if a power seat was available from the factory for that year and that model. If yes then go for it. If no, and you plan to show it at AACA Meets, then no as deductions would be taken. If you don't plan to show it at AACA Meets then power it up if you want to. I was kinda kidding when I stated weather I should use them or not. As far as points go at an AACA car show, I doubt my car will get any points at all considering they are going in a 61 Chevrolet Bubbletop. They didn't even make this type of bucket seat until 62. rocketraider
Didn't know anyone even offered a passenger power bucket in 63, but if anyone had, would have been Riviera, possibly Cadillac. Didn't the 61 SS car have bucket seats?Since you're not going for a stock resto, use the 4-way Riv driver bucket and if you want the extra complications and electrical load, use the 2-way passenger too. You should probably try to find a Riv wiring diagram for the passenger seat. You will need at least a 40A circuit breaker for the power seats and if it's like the Oldsmobile, a relay. I am guessing that it might have been a dealer option? As far as 61 SS cars goes, 1961 was the first year GM made the SS model and only a little over 450 total was produced with split bench seating only. It was such a big hit, that they continued the SS model in 62 and that's when they introduced this style of bucket seat. The bucket seat that GM produced pre 62 had a hard back shell that resembled the 62-65 bucket. It was mostly found in highly optioned GM convertibles ( Pontiac Bonneville being one ) from 58-61 if I am not mistaken. They are pretty rare to come by and when you do, be prepared to have your check book ready. They are super expensive! Below are pics of the hard back buckets pre 62. Last, The wiring for the seats along with the wiring for the power windows and vent window should not be that big of a problem. I will be replacing the complete wiring front to rear with a complete aftermarket application, just have to dig around and do a little research. Still have a way to go before I reach that point. The car is still on the rotisserie .Thanks for the reply.
TexRiv_63
I also did not know that a passenger power bucket was offered for Riviera in 63. I am guessing that it might have been a dealer option? You are correct, Buick did not offer a power passenger seat in 1963 Riv. The drivers seat controls were in the door armrest if the car had the deluxe interior option but I think they were mounted on the seat if the car had the base interior.
