Hi, Looking at this car on Ebay, I noticed the front axle was a solid tubular type. I thought all the sedans had independent front suspension by then. Can someone tell me what year they changed over. thanks

I'm pretty sure it went this way:

'34 Dodge - independent front suspension with coil springs and lever shocks

'35 Dodge - tubular axle with leaf springs and lever shocks

'36 Dodge - tubular axle with leaf springs and lever shocks

'37 Dodge - solid beam axle with tubular shocks

'38 Dodge - tubular axle with tubular shocks

'39 Dodge - independent with coil springs and tube shocks???

(Aside: If people would have responded to my posts concerning Factory Photos or photos of all original unchanged cars for the various years, this question could have been easily answered. Just getting my digs in!!!)

The eBay ad photos show what looks like an all original pair of '36 Dodge 4Dr Touring Sedans. The paint on the green one may have been redone but the rest looks accurate.

It would seem to be a good deal if all parts can be located by the current owner.

Hi Guy, this question peeked my interest, I am assuming the answer you are truly after is when did the trucks first feature independent front suspension. I still do not know the answer to this question but these two snippets are a start and I plan to continue searching for the answer and will let you know when I know. First is from Dec 1933 and second is Jan 1934

Ok somehow the images became reversed, Right image is Dec and left is Jan 34

Search continues, have fun

I know he said car but I think he may be really after truck so I didnt bother to say anything, just in case though....... 34 Dodger is right and here is a page from the salesmans data book showing it.

BTW 34 Dodger, I like your avatar, what a beautiful car, I would like to see more pictures of it and info you can share

I stand corrected and will make an edit to my post above concerning the '34 data to reflect that. Thanks!

(Interesting - They sure talked up the independent front suspension on the '34 dealer's handbook. Wonder why they went back to solid axles for four years after that? Seems a bit counter, doesn't it?)

MY guess on why they went back: Those old manufactures were very quick to keep cost down.

production cost -- far more parts in the independent which required more assembly time at the factory. Solid axles could be assembled as a unit and put on the frame faster.

Also dealers were probably not ready to service the complex independent systems. Those new fangled systems were too complex.

Thanks for all the replys guys. I guess we got to the bottom of that, not that I did anything. I was just wondering because of the 36 I saw on Ebay, noticed the front axle was solid, then was looking at pictures of Ian's 34, and saw it had independent suspension. So then I was confused, so got on here, and now all my questions have been answered. Ian, thanks for the pictures of the parts that go above the windshield. Do you think the car parts would interchange with th truck parts in that area? Thanks everyone.

I know that on the '36 and the '37 the header parts by the wiper motors do NOT fit pickup trucks..

Also, I see the pair of '36 Dodge 4dr touring sedans for sale in the eBay ad mentioned in this thread met the reserve and SOLD for $2700.00. That looks like a very decent start to a very nice finished car! Hope the buyer follows through and finishes a full restore. That should not be very hard to do!

It would be great to see another '36 dual sidemount car done! Hopefully it's not pieced out on epay!
