I have 2 crankshaft harmonic balancer that both came off a 53 buick v -8 engine. They look identical , have different numbers stamped on them. My question is why does one have a timing line mark and the other is plain ? If the timing mark is on the flywheel why does one have a mark on it ? Thanks.

My guess is that they are aftermarket or later year Buick front crank pulleys. I don't think 53 (and also 54?) used harmonic balancer pulleys originally.

My question to you would be why you don't post the numbers that you're looking at? Eliminates everybody guessing.

The 1953 Buick V-8 "1st jobs" engines did not come with a crankshaft balancer; they came with a crankshaft pulley. Late (aka "after jobs") 1953 and all 1954-1956 Buick V-8 engines came with a balancer. Change points were referenced based on both Syncromesh and Dynaflow transmission casting numbers.

My guess is that you have one late 1953 Buick V-8 "after jobs" balancer (without the timing mark), and one 1954-1956 balancer (with the timing mark).

Al, sounds about right. I took the one without the line off of a 53 motor myself. I also have an early car here with the early crankshaft pulley on it. I will use the one without the line. If anybody needs any 53 buick 4 door rear fenders or doors let me know , I am running out of room.

Thanks
