And how long did they last as a "have to have" accessory ?Was it before or after the "great war" ?Mike in Colorado:rolleyes:
Ben Bruce aka First Born
Mike, I can't say when they first appeared, but do know they were still very much in vogue in the '60s. Ben
FLYER15015
Ben,The reason for my question was that I was given a pair by a friend, who said that they would look good on the "baby".Now I do not want to be without any accessory that is "time period" correct, but I don't think these are.......Mike in Colorado
michaelod
Most cars I have seen these on were from the late 50's up to mid 60's. To my eye they are unattractive and add nothing to the appearance of the car, a bit like training wheels on a bicycle. They give the impression that one does not possess the skill to park their car properly without these aids.My take on it, but this is just a personal opinion. For those who really like them, enjoy. Ben Bruce aka First Born
Mike, when I say the '60s, they were still available then. We DID use them on our late '30s and '40s. I sold and installed a lot of them in the early '50s. And Michaels take is one opinion. Folks back then must have liked them. I had them on my'40 Special. Dwight Romberger
My Dad had them put on our brand new '63 Chevy Impala hardtop because my Mom couldn't park without running up on the curb. After, I think it was about seven of years, they just sort of "disappeared". The fact that I turned 16 and started to drive had nothing to do with it. FLYER15015
Now we have a discussion going......Nice to hear all the various opinions.I certainly do not NEED them, and I'll not install them if the consenses is that they came much later than after the big war.Makes me wish I'd bought that black '58 LTD, but I only have room/time for one Buick. DARN !!!!!!Mike in Colorado
Mark Shaw
I always thought they were to help keep white wall tires from rubbing on the curb.Didn't curb feelers come out about when white walls were the rage?
FLYER15015
Hey Mark,With the first half of YOUR stable, they sit so tall, you would have to have an extra long set of curb feelers. Wonder if they had "curbs" yet ?Then again, didn't those require a man walking in front carrying a big red flag ?Mike in Colorado
60FlatTop
Hmmmmmmm, I had a set on a '62 Electra I had once. Of course it gets confusing on the public square; front, left side, right side? What's a fella to do?
