Joseph P. Indusi
I am trying to pinpoint the possiblity of old gas in a friends car. He claims gas in the tank has a smell similar to fresh gas but also a faint smell of ammonia. He also extracted some of the gas from the tank and it is dark red color compared to a pale yellow of new gas.My question for the experienced among you is are these signs indicative of old gas? Thanks for any help.Joe BCA 33493
JFranklin
Yes. Take a small amount out and safely ignite it and see how it burns. If quickly and clean it still is ok. If it is hard to light and burns smoky use it to light your burn pile or recycle it. OOPS I see you are in NY so disregard the burn pile advise! Rural folk can do it if they need to also know. TexRiv_63
That dark color is usually a tipoff the gas is bad. If its ethanol mix gas and older than 6 months it is bad. Better safe than sorry, drain and replace before running the car.
