Guest Amicus
I found an intact windshield for my '54. It has "sand pitting". Can that be repaired, or do I keep looking? It's a good price.
buick5563
Keep looking. New ones are $500+ / - plus installation costs and gasket which you have to pay for anyway. I wouldn't spend the time putting a pitted one in unless yours is completely trashed (like baseball bat shattered)

It has major damage between the layers. What might it cost to repair one with sand pitting? $500 for new, plus VERY EXPENSIVE shipping adds up. Including gas to drive out to get this one, I'm looking at about $350.
buick5563
I haven't personally ever tried buffing a windshield, so can't help you there. Believe me, if I found one for my "driver" wagon that had some sand pits in it, I would replace it since mine is cracked. 49_buick_super
I agree with Mike. Do it once and right. You're going to have to replace the seal anyway so while you have the windshield out, do it right with reproduction glass. I can't imagine the work that would be involved in trying to use abrasives on windshield glass to remove pits.Dan
JZRIV
Typical sand pitting can not be polished out so that is not an option. Only fine scratches you can't catch a fingernail or razor blade edge on can be polished effectively. I've polished a few windshields to remove very fine scratches you can't catch a fingernail or razor blade on. Sand pitting never improved. To consider this used one, your current one would have to be significantly worse and the price of this pitted used one would need to be dirt cheap (like $75-$100) as well as you being able to install it yourself to make it worthwhile. So at $350 its just not worth it in my opinion but I don't know your situation. I'm all for saving a few bucks but give this some thought before jumping in as it may not be the place or time. Take a good look at the pitted windshield with the sun shining on it, if you can live with it without ever any regrets vs the money you saved, then go ahead and get it. I don't know what the condition is of the rest of the car. If it has many other important needs then every dollar you save here can go towards other perhaps more needy items so thats a factor in the decision as well.If you haven't already, you should get an up to date accurate price on a new windshield and installation if you're not doing it yourself. Do not make any assumptions here. That way you are basing your decision on hard facts. I am typically a very picky perfectionist, so if a pitted one can't be fixed, I know I wouldn't be happy.

Bhigdog
Somewhere in the Chrysler forum I posted very detailed instructions on how to polish lite to moderate wiper scratching out of a wind shield. But sand pitting is like stupid. It can't be fixed...........Bob
