William Rule
1990 Reatta coupe sucked a walmart plastic shopping bag into the pusher fan and fried the motor.Replaced the pusher assembly with a good fan from parts car. Checked the relays and they are all ok. No fans come on when the antifreeze BOILS. Also when I try to enter the diagnosis system----all the cluster lights flash on and off, no and off-----like it is trying to enter diagnosis mode but just can't get the job done. Problem started when the fan burned up. No burned wires------ fuses good. I hot wired both fans and they work. I am two hunderd miles from my FSM. Can someone please help me? padgett
Puller fan should still be working. Have heard of something like the light display only when entering diagnostics turning out to be a bad ECM. Did you check all three fan relays ? Might also try the old fashioned way of jumpering A to B in the ALDL connector and counting SES flashes.Just a thought: was the parts car an 88 ? Fans are wired differently for 88 only. William Rule
Yes,the doner pusher fan was from a 1988 Reatta-----the numbers on the dead fan were the same as the doner fan. I checked the relays by plugging them into the horn plug and honking horn with each relay-----all three honked the horn. I've never used the ALDL flash codes except for Teves problems. Well-----I guess I'll learn when I make it home. I thought maybe there would be some road side fix. Tomarrow I'll jump the new pusher and drive the two hundred miles to my shop and FSM. Thanks you for your help. This is the first time a Reatta has caused me any problems on a road trip and I have logged way over 100,000 miles in three Reattas. padgett
Did you check if one side of the 88 replacement had a ground jumper ? Same fan, different wiring. There was no series wiring for 88, LO was puller only through a resistor block. HI was direct 12v to both. No series connection.
Guest Mc_Reatta
The fans get power from fuseable link A behind the battery. Might want to check it's OK. Otherwise the fan relays are controlled by the ECM. Too bad you can't get into diagnostics mode so you could check relay operation.Failure to enter diagnostics mode can be caused by dirty switches on the climate control panel, or bad BCM too.The rear puller fan was different in an 88. Switched to a higher wattage motor in 89 and changed how the fans were wired.
William Rule
I jumped the fans and drove home {my shop}!!!!!! This is not my Reatta-----it belongs to a relative------I ran my mouth and said, "I'd fix a few things". Now I'm in way over my head. I have owned several Reattas-----the only problems I've encountered were Teves related and with the help of you folks I've been able to shut off the yellow light. When I picked the car up in Logan, Utah the only things I noticed that didn't work were one headlight, the tape player and the heater/AC blower. Then it ate the Walmart bag! Now it has many problems: won't enter dianostic mode---jumped A and B----no flash code. The heat gage is red lined all the time. When I turn on the key the good headlight flops up and down once with the light switch off. The fuse links are not burned up----fuses are ok-----relays all check good. The check engine light comes on as soon as the engine warms up. The ABS brakes work fine. I do not know where to start looking for a fix. I would hate to start swapping parts with my new convertible. I do have a 1988 parts car but not much will interchange. Any ideas where I should start looking???? Guest Mc_Reatta
Both the 88 donor car's ECM and BCM can be used in the 90 as long as you swap all the PROMS with the ones from the 90s before installing. If I had to choose I'd swap the BCM first based on your symptoms. That should hopefully get diagnostics up again which would help. But the ECM is easier to get to, and it would be just as easy to do both at the same time, see if problems solved, and then swap the originals back in one at a time to see if is OK or not. padgett
To me, this " won't enter diagnostic mode---jumped A and B----no flash code" says ECM or wiring not BCM. ECM is next to the HVAC programmer (black box with many vac hoses on bottom) and is reached by renoving the lower dash cover (with courtesy light). BCM is behind the glove box.If you have another ECM with a '90 PROM, you can just unplug the original without removing it and connect to a replacement just sitting on the carpet to see if works. William Rule
Jim Finn sent me a tested BCM. I will install it tomarrow after switching the two PROMS. I have my fingers crossed!!!!
padgett
More I ponder it, the more it sounds like an ALDL loop fault. The engine kept running when the dash blanked but SES light and "error" appeared in the odo ? Did you check for the ALDL cover by the parking brake - one that says "Do Not Remove" ?
