Don Hudd
this is from my previous post titled cam sensor , this is a summary:1.had a code for cam sensor, drove this way for a month, ran fine2. started to stall while going down the road, put in netural, would restart and run3. changed cam sensor- no change4. stalling got worse, had to brake torque to keep running, would idle though when not driving5. cleaned iac and maf, no change6. did fuel pressure test, checked out ok7.started stalling while idling, finally would not restart8. changed crank sensor9. started but rough idle, then stall, would stay running if giving gas10. checked for vacuum leaks(none found)11. getting some smoke from rear side of engine like something leaking and burning off(don't know if this has anything to do with my problem)12. blueish smoke from tailpipe when cold, clears up after a few minutes13. any help would be greatly appreciated. As you know, you guys are awesome and I really am grateful for your help
padgett
Can you get a complete ECM snapshot while running. Are any codes being set ?
Don Hudd
no codes, not sure how to do a snapshot
Ronnie
11. getting some smoke from rear side of engine like something leaking and burning off(don't know if this has anything to do with my problem)Could the smoke be coming out around the base of the EGR valve? If so you could have a blown EGR gasket. That would cause the problems you describe.
D-a-n-i-e-l
Check and clean EGR, and replace your O2. Also unplug each sensor and see if there is a change. If one of your sensors is malfunctioning and sending bad info to the ECM. Also I keep hearing alot about cleaning the MAS but they do go bad and not throw a code. Don Hudd
thanks, will clean egr as soon as i can. zoltanb
I suggest start with a basic, check compression, if ok move on to the plug wires look for corrosion on the tips of the coils. If they all check out I would try a different ECM if the soldering is failing it can give the same symptoms. I got stranded twice before I figured out mine had gone bad. Stick with it you can beat it.
Don Hudd
zoltanb, how would i check the EMC? where s it and what to look for?
zoltanb
The fsm is available on line at Reatta Data Page. Computer diagnosis is 45-8D and 46-8D1 it explains the procedure. If you have a spare ECM or can buy one from Jim Finn, swap it out. With age the solder deteriorates.
rguard
Don, The ECM is located behind the glove box. You have to take the screws out from around the glove box to remove it. Going back to your step#1, do you still have a code for the cam sensor? I suggest writing down all the current and history codes, then clear the codes to see if any come back again. I had a cam sensor code when I first got my '90 Reatta, but it still ran fine with it. The problem in my case was not the cam sensor, but missing magnet in the cam gear. I had to replace the missing magnet to fix that problem. I'm thinking you have multiple problems. I'm not sure about the smoke. Daniel is right, it could be bad mass air flow sensor. Mine went bad last year and my engine would stall, stutter, or not restart very easily. I had no engine codes. In my case, if I tapped on the MAS it would change - engine would die if running. I replaced the MAS and it has run great ever since. I hope that helps.
Don Hudd
sorry it has been so long since last post, but just couldn't get to work on car till now. As it turns out Ronnie was correct, it was the crank sensor. have driven it all day and no problems. the smoke seems to have been from the valve cover as the car was sitting at an angle in my driveway. I want to thank all who helped, you guys ROCK!! Now onto the b440 code
