RivNut
Could I get one of you fine gentlemen to post a picture of what a '64 Riviera seat belt buckle should look like? I've seen both a Fisher Body push button style and the aircraft lift lever style. Is one more appropriate than the other? Also, code 5W is for seat belts w/ retractors. What kind of retractor was on the Riviera? Was in enclosed in a housing or was it one of the "on the belt winders." I can't seem to find a reference anywhere. Was there any kind of emblem embossed or stamped on the buckle? Thanks,Ed Edited September 6, 2012 by RivNut (see edit history)
1965rivgs
Ed, the `64 belts with retractors are the same retractors and covers as the `65 and up but the buckles are plain chrome with the Buick trishield stamped into the buckle, no colors, just stamped into the metal and chromed over. I dont have an example handy as I sold all my `64 belts but I`m sure a quick google images search will bring up the correct belt buckle. 1965rivgs
This is not the retractor one would get when ordering the custom seat belts with retractor from the factory. This retractor was a dealer installed or aftermarket type. The factory retractor is floor mounted on the outboard side of the seats and the mechanism is encased in a plastic cover. rivgs
Ed, Snake-oyl rewebbed my seatbelts about 15 years ago. They did a great job and they still look like new.
1965rivgs
Hi King, Did you purchase your Riv as a new car? If so the dealer may have added these retractors but quite honestly they dont look like the retractors marketed thru the Buick accessories program. I dont think those retractors were installed at the factory. Belts look like new...must be a low mile beauty! `64 was a strange year for seat belts as they were not required equipment until Jan `64 so I guess anything was possible, Tom Mooney

You know, you replace one thing then it makes something else look bad & you gotta replace that too...lol
Guest Frankie Schotts
Hi. I just purchased a 1964 Riviera and am new to the forum. My Riv does not have seat belts. I would like to add front seat belts. Does anyone know if the floor of the car came equipped with the iron plates that the seat belts would anchor to? Or do I have to have something welded under the floor? There are no seat belt predrilled holes from what I can tell. Thanks
RivNut
read post #9 in this thread. http://forums.aaca.org/f177/lap-belt-lengths-64-riviera-351160.html In it I've quoted from the chassis manual as to what to look for in the way of seat belt holes. They say to look for plugs to remove. They will be on the inside of the rocker panel rather than the floor for the outer belts and close to the hump for the inner belts. The illustration shows where to find the dimples in the body for drilling holes for rear belts. Wesco offers some decent retro styled belts and the anchors to which you refer. If you're looking to install 3-point belts, do a search for what the Aussies did to a couple of their cars.
