Burgundy '89 Reatta

Mr Buick

Recommended Posts

A guy down the road from me has a Reatta sitting on his farm and I understand he wants to get rid of it. I am not sure his asking price, or the condition, but if anyone is interested, I can get photos and condition and price. Is anyone interested in this information? Let me know and I will seek out the info. Thanks, John

If possible, get some pictures, price and find out what year it is...... If you post the vin number here, we can tell you the year.

Also being a Wisconsin car, potential buyers will want to see what it looks like from a rust standpoint.

Sometimes snow-belt cars look bad on the outside and great inside, it might make a good parts

John. I am always interested in a project Reatta. I personally want an 88 with suede seat bolsters, a 1990 or 1991. My colors preference is Burgandy, Driftwood or dark blue, depends on year. Let me know/let us know. I would pay $500. I don't want a damaged car but if he just parked it for high mileage, I am interested. Bryan Moran abc.moran@netzero.net

Ok, I finally got a few photos of the Reatta. It is an 89 model with approx 100,000 miles. It runs good, but has a brake line leaking and a few other minor items. There is some rust. more surface than anything, but the frame and undercarriage are decent. The photos were taken by the son of the mechanic working on the car. If you want more or the name and number of the owner, let me know.

I am not sure how much he is asking for the car, I am thinking to 1000-1500 $ range, but not sure. Please PM me or email me at: ruddracing28@hotmail.com Thanks for your time. John

OK Guys and Dolls, You gotta love this technology don't you? I texted the mechanic that is working on the car, asking for undercarriage photos and had 5 of them within 2 minutes, and within 10 minutes, they are on line! How crazy is that!! Remember the days of having to send the photos in the mail!!! With postage!!! Anyway, here are some photos that show some rust, not bad tho. Again, let me know if you have any questions, or want to get in touch with the actual owner.

That's Burgandy outside color correct? Almost 100% but not sure. The rust is bad on this one. On the body not so bad, but underneath it will have casued seizure of most fasteners. Hope it can be saved. Are they in the process of making it roadworthy or is it sold as is?

For a couple of grand and a few days with wire brush, POR 15, & rustolium you could probably make a decent driver. This kind of car is what is holding the market down today, are just too many of them. Could mention a number of cars (e.g. GTOs) that went through this period. The next stage is when these cars disappear from the roads, only southern/California cars or garage queens are left, and these become "garage finds".

This car is pretty much spot-on to the rust situation and general condition of my white/burgundy '89 before I bough it. I paid $300 in 2008 and I figure with all the stuff I've done to it (new gas tank, brake lines, rear suspension, rust repair, etc, I have about $3000 in it now. It's still a very reliable driver.

I am replacing my rusted fuel lines, fuel tank and rear suspension on my '89. I was able to find replacements from a '90 which has rubber fuel lines with stainless lines from the filter to the intake manifold. The replacement rear suspension had minimal rust, but beware, when I removed the struts I found that the strut tower mounting hole had rusted to the point that it was not even a round hole. I found a welding stop that removed the rusted mounting hole and welded in a new top for the strut to mount to. Looks good now and worth the money spent. I decided to sand the fuel tank as a wire wheel and wire brush were not removing the pitted rust in strap locations and areas where water can sit on top of the tank. The fuel tank was sanded to where it looks like a new tank, it is difficult to sand the crimped ridge but just removing the surface rust should be adequate.

I am currently (in between coats) spray painting my replacement fuel tank. I have totally sanded down the fuel tank and put two coats of rust reformer and I just put on the first coat of rust protective enamel.

It has been quite a project but it is worthwhile to keep this car as a longterm driver. I will contiunue to turn around the rusted fate of this car and more rust projects are yet to be performed. So don't count this car, in the near future, to meeting the crusher.

Hi Bryan, Yes the color is Burgandy, and the car is sold as is. It does run and drive, so it could be a driver as is, it just needs a good cleaning. I can get you the owners number if you like, just let me know. Thanks, John

It's still restorable and I would hate to see it crushed. It has - in my opinion - a nice color combination. The issue is that this one is due for a total restoration in my opinion. Some may see it as a driver for another 2-4 years. The rust would worry me as it probably has attacked the front cradle and suspension.

The car is solid and has mainly surface rust and scale rust on the cradle. I work with the mechanic who is working on the car and he says it is a solid car. The owner told me this afternoon that if anyone wants the car he will sell it for $500.00!!! If it's not gone by the end of the week, he says it's going to scrap. His name and number is in a post above. Call him guys, I hate to see it junked. John

It's a perfect $500 car, basically $100 over crusher price.

Well, I just called him and he was offered $500 for it and turned that down, he said he thinks it's worth $700. He does not believe it would make it from central Wis to Iowa without replaced brake lines, so he is going to get a quote to replace the leaking lines and get back to me and said he would not send it to the crusher without providing a repair quote, so it's $700 as is, not driveable and I will update on cost to repair.

He said that an older couple had it under a car cover for 7 years with the intent to restore and then they were going to just take it to the salvage yard (or have it picked up-according to the seller).

This unfortunately confirms some of the forum concepts on Reatta value/collectability in that here was a "decent" fairly low mileage car that the owners at one time thought worthy of repair and restoration but eventually understood it in their minds to be nothing more then a - say - 1989 Chevy Lumina that was worn out.

Hang in there Reatta crowd. Anyway, Burgandy is one of my favorite colors next to Driftwood so I will stay involved with the car but the seller Mike seemed pretty sure on $700. Not a big fan of the 89's, would prefer a suede bolster 88 or 90-91 but they all look good with fresh paint.

Anyone else want it, hop on board, it's not mine by a long shot. I think I just bought it some more time though.

shoot, "if" i was interested and nearby, i'd offer $600 - and tow it home on a dolly. would save the owner the cost and time dealing with the brake issue! and i'd let him know that.

but i'm not nearby, nor interested. :)

Nearby is relative. I believe this car is even 400 miles away from me. Not far, but a good long day drive. At $1.50 a loaded mile, that adds another $500or more in transport. This car is best purchased at least strong enough to drive home, IMO.
