Guest shfree Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Does anybody know the history of this car?:Buick Riviera for sale | Hemmings Motor NewsIt appears to have Gran Sport badging, but the motor appears to be the base 425. It would be interesting to know how that happened.
alini Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 The base motor in 65 was the 401, the GS had a 425
JZRIV Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 The car isn't advertised as a GS so perhaps its simply a base car with GS emblems and no further explanation needed. The 425 was optional therefore could be ordered in non-GS form........but not many got the 425 single 4 barrel. Pics are hard to see but according to what looks like 445 on the air cleaner its the 401.You'd need to contact the owner for details and ask for some numbers to fully vet the car.
Guest shfree Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 The base motor in 65 was the 401, the GS had a 425 Yeah, I shouldn't have called it a "base." I still wonder how that combination occurred, though.
RivNut Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Probably some reproduction fender badges. Look at the Riviera Owners website (the link is in my signature) and browse around until you find the article written on how to identify a Grans Sport. Lots of things to look for. Most you can't identify from pictures; you need someone to take a really close look at it.Ed
rivgs Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 (edited) It looks like some personalizing was done to the car ( 68 side marker lights, 67-69 roof "R" emblem on the vinyl top, antenna on the LR fender ) so adding Gran Sport emblems wouldn't seem to be out of the question.
