v12lincoln Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I just bought a 31 5 window coupe that needs total restoration, it has the B engine in it now and it comes with a new C engine. What are the differences between the two. I have lots of old cars but this is my first early Ford.
JFranklin Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 The C engine is a misnomer as Ford never branded an engine as a c engine. the early B engines were not counterweighted and then later ones were and people started to differentiate them as B and C.
Dave Mellor NJ Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Not all "C" stamped engines have the counter balanced crank. You have to open them up to know for sure.
motoringicons Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 What causes the confusion is that a Model B engine has a cylinder head with a big letter "C" embossed, so, over the years, people have assumed it is a "C" engine, which does not exist. The four cylinder Model B engine was used in cars and trucks from 1932 to 1934. By 1933 and especially by 1934, it was mainly found in pickup trucks and the larger ton trucks. Production of the Model B engine itself continued well into the 1940s and at some point several thousand engines were shipped overseas, including a large batch that went to Russia. About 30 or so years ago, a large stash of complete, New Old Stock, never used Model B engines were found overseas and brought back to the US. I remember seeing a bunch of them at a vintage Ford parts dealer in California still in their original wood crates. I believe their are three crankshaft versions: a non-counterbalanced crank, a crank shaft with swedged-on counterweights and one that was built with counterweights.
Guest Bluesmobile Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 It would be interesting to see your C engine. There were a lot of these engines brought back from Russia in the 1970's. Russia apparently kept cranking them out long after they were obsolete here. There is a 6 page article in the October 2012 issue of Hot Rod Magazine that refutes the thought that there was no C engine, interesting reading.
vermontboy Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 I always thought that "Model C" heads had the 3 bolt water pump, but maybe Model B engines did as well. Here's a picture of a 31 Sport Cpe I semi restored back in the early 60's with a 3 bolt waterpump head.
Dave Mellor NJ Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 (edited) That pic looks like a Model A engine with a B head and water pump.A B block would have a fuel pump blankoff slightly ahead of and below the carb. That's an odd aircleaner Edited September 22, 2012 by Dave Mellor NJ (see edit history)
vermontboy Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Yes - Model "A" block with a "B" head - can't remember why in my memory it was called a "C" head..... That "air cleaner" actually hooked up to the oil filler/breather on the other side of the block - primitive pollution control ????
