Guest dasaint80 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Hey everyone, I got a 1955 Buick special it was running smoothly about a month ago. For the past few days I can't seem to he the car to start it cranks but no start. I swapped the battery thinking it was the battery (well found out that the battery wouldn't hold a charge, good thing I got a new one). And still no luck. There is gas in the car (about half a tank). The car is parked in my drive way which is a slight incline. I'm wondering if that might affect the starting issue( it wasn't an issue before). So I'm thinking it could be carburetor but I'm not exactly sure. Is there anyhow I can find out if the carb is working properly. Steve
smithbrother Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Have you removed the air cleaner, put your hand over the carb inlet, cranked the engine to see if it is sucking gas? If you haven't done this in the past, be WARNED, it can be a tad tricky, and could back fire up thru the carb. If you haven't done this before, maybe a friend has, and can help out. You can spray starting fluid in the carb opening, a short blast will tell you if a fuel issue tooooooooo. You can hit the SEARCH section on starting problems, this has been discussed, OFTEN. I wish you well,Dale in Indy
old-tank Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Leave the carb alone until you are sure there is spark at the plugs.
smithbrother Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Certainly it's a good idea to check for spark, I was just saying for a very FAST check on whether fuel is getting to the carb, that the OLE HAND OVER CARB AIR INLET TEST might give you a quick answer. Yep, you need SPARK, COMPRESSION, FUEL, and GOOD CRANKING SPEED, and even then it might not start. Many things to consider, for sure. I still maintain that a SEARCH of starting issues would be a good thing for you to do.I wish you well,Dale in Indy
carbking Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 As a general rule:Carburetor components fail over years.Ignition components fail over seconds.Electronic components fail instantaneously.Check the components most likely to fail first.Jon.
Guest dasaint80 Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 So I have the car towed to my buddies shop. I already had replaced the Battery, ignition coil and the fuel filter. At his shop we noticed there was no spark so we replaced the condenser that goes inline with the ignition coil. That fixed it. Weird Stuff!! Steve
