HVAC Fan - Intermittent Problem Has Returned

in the last few days, on short trips (between 3 and 10 miles), the hvac fan works fine and a/c cools correctly until i stop, do whatever business i have - 5 minutes to 1 hour. when i restart, the fan will not come on. i can feel cold air if i put my hand at the vent(s). and when i get home, the compressor is running correctly. if i wait 30 minutes or longer - with her parked in the garage (shade), the fan works fine... this afternoon, when i started it in the garage, i let it idle up to operating temp with the heater on - actually up to 205 degrees. shut her down for about 10 minutes, and restarted. the fan, cold a/c worked as it should.

when this happens, the fan does not operate on auto, low or high. today when stopping at my destination, i put it on heater and raised the temp to max heat. when i came back and started her, the fan wouldn't work, again.

this 1st started in may, but the fan would start back up after driving about 5 minutes. now, it won't come on at all, until as stated above, in the garage after some time has passed.

i've searched the forum and looked at the 1988 "final edition" service manual - pg# 1B1-6 & 7.

my questions are:

could it be the "heater and a/c power module" or a bad connection to same?

a clogged cooling hose to the blower motor?

appears in the manual, that the above are accessed from the engine side of the firewall. correct?

any "codes" i should look for?

if i've overlooked anything, please forgive me. i have had some health issues flare back up (very temporary, i hope). but the meds mess with my concentration sometimes. :o it doesn't help much that the driver's side window is still broken in the up position. :(

thanks to everyone again for all the help i've found here!!!:)

I had exactly the same problem, always thought it was the blowere control module. Then like you when it didn't come out at all I swapped it with one in my other Reatta. Works as it should and never missed a beat. A blower fan is about $25.00 I would give it a try...

thanks Dave for the quick response!

did your blower motor still work after some time passed after it stopped the 1st few times, or did it just go completely out?

Just like yours. It would be slow coming on at first [slower and slower] and then the final straw was driving 10 miles home with no air [A/C or vent air]. Swapped out that day with the Black. Worked as it should ever since...

ok, found my old thread so i wouldn't hi-jack the one where the hvac fan is on all the time... :o

today, i ran all over town running errands - the first day that it was around 80 since this problem started. i had no problems with the fan - worked every time i started her.

it's set on 68. this summer i've set it up to max heat (86?) before i turned the ignition off - and the fan still running - came back out and the fan wouldn't work with the a/c off...

Dave, i'm sure i'll need to replace the fan when i'm physically able, but curious as to why it worked this spring all the time, got up into the high 80's and above - stopped working after the first or second stop - never while first running - no matter if it was 5 or 25 miles - then seems to working today when it's cooler. does 10 degrees or so higher outside temp make this happen?

or was i just lucky today? ;)

A pretty sharp guy on this site explained to me that the copper windings on the motor will expand and not allow the motor to work. I too didn't notice the problem in cooler temps, but even then there was always a brief interval before the fan would come on. No hesitation since swapping it out.

no doubt i'm going to have to replace the HVAC motor, but when i'm "able" again, i need to prioritize repairs:

first, i think i need to do a trans flush. if you remember to old crayola 64 pack of crayons, the color of the fluid in "indian red" - dang near brown. :(

fixing the driver's side window - sash channel rivets. i might have to farm that one out (never did one and don't have the tools).

the HVAC fan.

then i can go on to the ABS light always on (brakes work fine), and a legal pad of notes for more "piddly" things that need attention - or things that may happen after today...

if anyone thinks my "priority list" order should be changed, let me know. :)

my health and short term (?) lack of funds are the biggest obstacles right now!

all will be fine soon, i hope... :D
