Hello all, I just bought a 1964 Riviera and need a little help identifing what the options were on this car. Vin #7K1209837. The body tag reads 64-4747 FB34341 62-1 EX-2K-3T-4F-5WK. Also, my air cleaner has Wildcat 445 on it. Did Buick put a 401 in early '64's?

No - just the 425. Check the number stamped on the block edge just in front of valley cover pan on the driver side. If original engine that number will match the VIN. If it doesn't match theres a two letter code stamped a few inches away on the passenger side in front of valley cover. With that you can identify what the engine is from.

If you plan to keep your car, work on it, and drive it a membership in ROA is money well spent.

Can't find the right thread, but weren't some export 64s equipped with the 401? Don't know where culprit51 is from, but it is posible he may have one of those and everything be factory correct with a 401. Kind of a reach, but maybe...

If / when he finds the numbers Jason was referring to, he can tell us all for sure exactly what he has. A matching engine serial number and VIN will tell Culprit51 (for lack of a name) if the engine is original to the car. Then the engine code will tell him what size / hp it is.

Culprit51: here's a link that will guide you to where to find the numbers Jason referred to. Just look at the picture, the text below it is for earlier years. If you try to tie the text to the picture, you'll just confuse the issue.

On the left side has JT490 and the right has 7J1057090 which tells me it is not the original motor. But what size is it?

The 490 is inconsequential. The J is for 1963, the T is for 401. Somewhere along the way, at least the block has been swapped. The '63 crank would not work with the '64 transmission and flexplate unless some mods were made to it. I don't know if you can find casting dates on the heads, but there is a difference in the 63 intake and the 64 intake. The 63 carb also used different linkage on it. I might take a WAG and say that the 64 crank and other parts were swapped over to a 63 block.

The engine serial number decodes like this: 7 = Riviera, J = 1963, 1 = Flint, the next six digits are the production number.

If you can, get the numbers off the intake and carb so they can be decoded as well.

Ed, This is what i can find. Right exhaust manifold is 119691J, Left side is B1196914J. Intake has 1863782, under it has 1or 7 E. also on the front of intake has F/24

It looks as if your car does have a 63 401 short block in it.

Here's a list of intake casting numbers that I've copied and pasted from the Team Buick website.

You number is the last to appear; identified as a 1965 4bbl intake.

Apparently the list is incomplete. I'm going out on a limb here, but perhaps the J on the end of each number represents 1963. All other Buick VIN's, Engine ID Codes, etc., end in J for 1963.

Unless you're trying to sell the car as a numbers matching car, the numbers are not a big deal.

Just enjoy your ride.
