Guest ewing
I'm almost afraid to ask as the answer may be obvious, but I have a new fan belt, on my 47 roadmaster ( got it from Bobs so I am confident it is the right belt). It is tensioned ok, and about 1000 miles on it.When the car is cold on start up it always squeeks on rotation, and only after the car is completely up to operating temp does it quiet down.I have 'dusted the belt rubber with 'baby' powder to reduce the fresh rubber belt surface to a more 'weathered feel' , but that didn't make any difference.I am leery of the belt anti squeek sprays so haven't tried that.Has anyone experenced this with a new belt, and any suggestions as to how to loose the squeek ?Thanks,John
old-tank
JohnReasons for squeaking: worn pulleys, probably not notched, probably not fabric wrapped like the original was.Turn the radio up.Willie
Guest ewing
not fabric wrapped is probably the reason. What do you mean by notched? is that the inside face of the belt? because it is not notched there like some belts I have seen.Anyone know where I can buy a good replacement belt for a 47 320 ci? Guest Straight eight
A bar of face soap works fine to quiet a belt. Also 303, a lubricant available at most marinas and some hardware's, that the Harley Boys use on the drive belt of their motorcycles. For source see 303Products.com. I have no financial interest, but have used on my old fan belts for years. Edited July 15, 2012 by Straight eight (see edit history)
pirate
I got a fan belt from Bobs for my 47 320 ci and it also squeeked. I used the commercial belt dressing on it and the fix was temporary. The noise came back after a while. Then I used WD40 and the belt dressing in combination out of desperation and it seemed to have fixed it perminately. I do remember years ago using Ivory soap and having some success
Guest ewing
thanks for the suggestions, I'll give them a try , starting with the easiest, , face soap. I'll report back on this.
Guest ewing
checked the placement of the soap bar against the belt, before starting the car to make sure I didn't tangle hands with belt or fan blades. Started up the car, touched the ivory soap bar lightly against the running belt, and instantly squeek is gone. The soap appears to give the rubber belt the light lubey it needs to stop the rubber squeel on the pulleys.Running the car cold or hot it is nice and quiet now!Down side is I can now hear the generator bearings... , a drop of oil in each bearing race, and away we go!Thanks, great suggestion, and another use for Ivory soap.
