Yep I have talked to the owner and it is a limited edition and has 003 on the muffler. This is the first one to surface in several years and is a good find

For anyone that has not seen one of the pewter models, here is a picture. Note this is not a picture of the item for sale, just a photo of the basic model. The mirror was postioned so you could see the underside detail. There were three versions of the base, with a different plaque depending on who or what group received the model. One version says Select Sixty Dealers, one is for the Pacesetter award, and the last just says "Limited Edition 1988 Reatta Commemorative Replica"

The car is just under 5 inches long, the walnut base if roughly 5 X 6 inches.

Someone filled the seller with unrealistic 2012 prices. I just dont understand why people always feel the need to chime in with sellers that arent even buyers! A buyer is and only is a person that is ready to write the check, not dreamers. Reminds me alot of the select 60 for 2995 a few months ago in TX. We all see how that played out, no one got it and now its 16995 and Still sitting there. Oh well, I guess.

I was offering cash on that car in TX. I was packing up to go pick it up when the seller called back and said he didn't want to sell it for that price. I even upped my offer $3k on the spot and he still refused. He said several people claiming to be from the Reatta club told him that he shouldn't take any less than $12,000 for it.

Again, tire kickers and arm chair cigar smokers. Not the ones writing the check, or in my case, passing the cash.

I am use to it though, when people run their mouth and don't "have" or don't "want" to put their money where their mouth is. The $12,000 referred to was for an actual car down in Texas some months ago that was initially offered by an apparently uninformed dealer for a low ball price of $2995. Once the dealer was inundated by calls from a bunch of "expert appraisers" as to the value of what they had, the price jumped way up. And now, it sits as it has gone from too low to too high. Of course the joke is on him, as he believed some hype that was spouted on the phone and now he is [still] stuck with the car in his inventory. The pewter model was/is not selling for $12K. If it is, it is worth more than most actual life size Reattae, and that would be insanity defined. I could buy 2 nice Reatta for that amount, with some money left for repairs.

These kinds of situations are why, when seeing a "too good to be true deal" you just jump on it if you have the money. As soon as it gets blabbed about in public, everyone who can't afford it is - quite interestingly - all too willing to tell the seller how much it is "really" worth, leaving those who would and could put their money on the table to overpay or just forget about it altogether. This is much like the ebay effect of jealous/resentful bidders upping the bid when they have no intention or means of buying, just to make the guy who can and does want to buy it pay way more than would have been needed. I have seen this happen, so don't discount the pettiness of some people. Of course, an auction format drives the mentality of "just gotta go a little bit more, I'm sure my next bid will get it!".

Now, I am not into screwing someone on an item for sale if the price is ridiculously low due to their not knowing any better. In such events, I have been known to offer more than the asking price for something just to satiate my conscience. I have had a couple of times where a seller actually refused the higher offer (I couldn't believe it!) but generally they are quite thankful for being told they were too low on their asking price. Maybe that makes me a sucker, but sometimes you get the proverbial little old lady who is cleaning out her basement, and a real treasure is put up for pennies on the dollar. I just can't do business that way.

Went back and read the posts. I guess I wasn't paying attention when it got switched from the model to the Select 60 in Texas.

BTW what does a pewter model go for nowadays? My wife and friends laugh/shake their head in amazement at what some of this Reatta stuff sells for.

I know that this thread was highjacked, but would still be interested if the pewter model Reatta ended up being sold, or what the highest offer was. This was one of the real gems of Buick's dealer marketing department.

Maybe not sold, but the selling price only went up 50%! Mainly because of what the experts "think" its worth. Interesting though, since I was always told something is only worth what buyers will write the check for. What I wonder is, if any of them would write that check?

It is an endless cycle. When someone is sell, they always think their item is worth more. When you are buying you always want the price to be low.

At some point the seller either quits advertising or if they need the money lower the price (if they get an offer) Buyers get afraid they will not find another one and either pay the asking price or don't.

In the case of the Pewter models, they are fairly rare. We know that 60 went to "Select Sixty Dealers" this program was explained as the Buick General Managers program that covers all phases of the business (sales, service, customer satifaction, etc) The "Pacesetters" program was the top 100 dealers selected by the Buick Sales Manager and it appears to be soley for top sales. I do not know if a dealer could be both a Select Sixty dealer and a Pacesetter.

This tells us there were a minimun of 160 made, and additionally we know there were some unknown number that had the "commemerative replica" plaque attached to the walnut stand. So the total might be as low as 200 made. The upper number produced is unknown, but because of rarity based on the number that appear for sale might only be 200, or 300, or even 400. Maybe we will find someone that knows the actual number.

Regardless of the price, models are much easier to store, move, and sell than full size cars. You can have a dozen on a shelf and in most cases they hold their value better than real cars.
