Guest slyhog022056
Hey people. I started dismounting the worn out tube type bias ply tires on my 52 today and the wheels have rust pits on the outer bead seating area. I would like to keep the original wheels but not sure what to use to fill the rust pits. I have been thinking of blasting then using lead or brass rod but dont know how well it would hold up. I am already having to weld up all the rivets in the wheel to be able to use tubeless tires, so i want to do everything at 1 time. I will be powdercoating them so bondo is out of the question along with epoxies and JB weld. I know high temp Lab Metal is powdercoatable but doesnt hold well in thin areas. Restorer32
Why not just use tubes?
Guest slyhog022056
Tubes and flaps arent meant to be used with tubeless tires and i sure cant afford bias ply tires from coker....
Tedd Thompson
Rather than go to a lot of work on rusty pitted rims just look for better ones, they made them for years and you should be able to find some in a junkyard or on line cheaper than what you are trying to do..Just my 2 cents.....Tedd
Guest slyhog022056
I have been looking since i got the car about a month ago. I may have to go the Vintiques way to keep the steel wheels. Its a standard chevrolet 5 on 5 bolt pattern just havent seen any at the recyclers that would pass for me. Even though i will be using the full wheelcovers i would like them to be close to original looking. Just keep 1 original for the spare so at least it will be correct looking in the trunk. I grew up in a tire shop and it was a common practice back in the day. Of course if you are using radials you need tubes designed for radial tires.
