alini
I am picking up a 65 Riviera next weekend that requires a complete restore. Its been parked in the Vegas sun for 12 years but the body is straight and absolutley no rust. The entire driveline will be rebuilt and I plan on just replacing worn bushings and hardware, nothing over the top.If you rebuilt a 65, what is your words of caution. Where did you struggle with your restore? And tips for someone who has never touched one.I have already ordered the manuals, to guide me with the work but experience cant read in a manual
RivNut
Most of what you're asking has been discussed in previous threads. Make a list of everything you want to question and then do an archive search (black bar at the top of the page, third from the right.) When you get there, do an advanced search and type in your key words then in the right hand column, limit your search to the Riviera Owners Association threads. When you come up with a question you can't answer from your search, it will probably be something new that everyone will want to know about. Two areas of caution. 1 ) Very little is reproduced for these cars. Hopefully the car you're getting is complete. If not, there are folks who specialize in parting out Rivieras. Those vendors advertise in the Riviera Owners Assn's. magazine. It would be a good idea to join. www.rivowners.org 2) There are vendors out there who claim their parts fit your car - they don't. Before purchasing anything, see if anyone has purchased the same thing from the same vendor and get some feedback on it. e.g - body mounts, brake rod reaction bushings, track bar bushings, etc. If your car has been sitting in Vegas for 12 years, I think you should probably plan on replacing every piece of rubber on it. Those pieces are probably baked beyond recognition. The car I got from AZ was like that.Ed
alini
I already plan on reading every thread here to educate myself, but I was hoping some kind foks could just reply things like having problems getting the glass out, or issues with suspension I should plan on addressing while its apart. Just a simple sentence to narrow my search.I plan on replacing all rubber and the interior will require alot of attention as well. The car is complete, except for a radiator and its bracket. Someone stole it while it was in storage.
RivNut
If they stole the radiator, did they get the fan shroud as well? The shrouds are being reproduced. You'll definately need one if you live in Nevada. You can probably have a radiator custom made for you if you can't find a good used one.Ed
alini
No, they only took the radiator. they cut the upper hose, but I know thats replaceable. I would replace the radiator anyway, being in the desert.
