Paul Falabella
The P/S pump on my Roadmaster is leaking. Seems to be between reservoir and pump. My question does it pay to rebuild whole pump or should replacing the seal lick the problem? How common is this? And what can be used for P/S fluid? Thanks. Bhigdog
If that's the only thing wrong with the pump it can be fixed right on the car by replacing the gasket. ATF is the correct fluid..............Bob
old-tank
PaulIf you don't have shop manual, watch for spacers in the gasket --- don't lose them. Also the bottom of the reservoir may be bent from someone pulling on the reservoir to tighten the belt. Use a cork/rubber gasket material or leather (my preference).Willie
Paul Falabella
Referring to exploded view in parts book. If I remove fluid(baster maybe), there should be 4 bolts at bottom of reservoir. Assuming gasket(AE) is available Bob's, CARS or such without buying whole kit. Any ATF will do?

bhambulldog
I've got a leaky reservoir. A search for gaskets led me to this thread. When I rode motorcycles, I made my own gaskets.I'll try my hand on the steering pump. Thanks guys
Bhigdog
As far as I know there are no kits or ready made gaskets available. They are not difficult to make. A cheap gasket punch set ( Harbor Freight ) helps a lot. Note, as Old Tank said, there are spacers in the bolt holes. They are there to prevent you from over squishing the gasket. The gasket material you use MUST be thicker than the spacers. My preference is for rubberized cork material and a thin coat of aviation Permatex on both sides of the gasket. Any ATF will be fine...............Bob

bhambulldog
I just found this;Old Buick Parts - CARS. Inc.-- What about these?
Paul Falabella
Good advice also to see if reservoir is misshapen. I can see a natural tendency to pull the top to tighten belt.
Bhigdog
I just found this;Old Buick Parts - CARS. Inc.-- What about these? There you go. Just two comments. You can make the gaskets for next to nothing, and.......... at the risk of being deleted for heresy...........much of what I've bought from them has proven to be less than satisfactory in both fit or performance..........Bob
bhambulldog
I've been hearing that about CARS lately. I've ad good luck with CARS. However it's been 12 years since I bought something from CARS>$22 is not a bad bet. But, if they don't work, having to do the work twice would be the real cost. Ben Bruce aka First Born
I agree with Mr Coker. And all the gaskets I have received from them are Best Gasket Co. Ben

My inate frugality and satisfaction derived from doing it myself would dictate getting out the punches and scissors. Then taking the $30 saved and go buy more beer.......................Bob

Also I don't know if is my impatient nature or forgetful nature, but if I have something apart I want it back together right away.Willie
