Fake white walls

they need to be carefully mounted to be centered correctly. As said , so long as they stay "convex" they look ok. Clean like regular whitewalls.

"Portawalls" are great and not expensive. I've used them for 50 years when necessary. They look great but I experienced two minor problems because I put lots of miles on them.

#1 They tend to suck the black out of the rubber in the host tire and appear to have brown stains after many miles.

#2 When used on radial tire, they can make a grove in the host tire.

Remember I've used then on some of my cars, and this car has been towed all over the country in addition to being driven a lot. I would guess the limited use of a show or cruise car wouldn't experience this. Sounds like a good idea for your low buck beater.

Paul, I had the same issues using them on one of my Metropolitans. Finally dumped them for a set of real wide whites.

I finally quit using them too, but the question was about a low buck solution and that they are! As I kid I preferred them to whitewall paint, which I used to have whitewalls all around on cars with mismatched tires.

Remember, if you squint, they look really good, even if painted on. Then we found a "regroover" who visited car lots and cut the white walls the same width with a machine in the back of his Corvair Van. To expensive, I kept using paint & portawalls. At $1.00 @ Hour, I had to go the low buck route.

This was all before Coker & Diamondback & Universal. My first 34 Ford had new blackwall "Allstate" tires (from Sears) with Portawalls. Looked fine!

Uhhh, the port-a-wall came on a parts car, I didn't buy the set new and install them. Car had been sitting in a field for 30 years. They all looked similar. Just thought my pic would be an interesting addition to the discussion. Maybe not?

My personal experience is driving under 45 mph or short trips is ok, but several hours at 60-70 mph will sling them off the rim. Looked nice on the car until I arrived at a local show with one or two missing!
