Dumb Question: How do I obtain error codes in my '88 Reatta?

Serious Problem: Using the Climate Control at all causes the car (Which runs fine now) to sputter and die. After letting it cool down a few hours, it starts right back up so I can turn off the Climate Control. With Climate Control off, I can drive the car all day and night without issues.

No obvious connection between the climate control and engine running but the ECM is involved in both operations when AC is involved.

Here's how to start using diagnostics. Can't say enough about learning to use this amazing functionality built into our Reattas.

Thanks guys! I ran the diagnostics and came up with four history codes: e401 e042 c553 b552.

How can I find out what they're for?

EDIT: Tested ECM as well, and got the code: edo1

With engine off, should be able to turn the compressor end by hand. If locked up is best to unplug until it can be replaced.

Is no e401, could have been e041 ? Since all are history (last two are battery replaced) I'd clear and see what comes back.

ed01 is engine data 1, not a trouble code.

Download and read the 88 diagnostics pamphlet.

I would go to Ronnies site and look up the serpentine belt that bypasses the A/C compressor. That would make sure that the A/C is not dragging the motor down.

Also never hurts to have an extra belt to carry in the car...
