Guest Corvanti
not quite the next thing on my "list" but:when i replaced the passenger side seat belt, the foam that surrounds the right rear speaker was not looking so well. most (90%) was still there, but would flake off upon touch.the larger of the two speakers had no tears, but the front appeared like "flannel". the tweeter was ok. sounded a lot worse when i took her out for a test drive yesterday. i'm wondering when i start into it, would replacing the foam help? or just replace the speaker(s)? i've got some decent 6X9's still in the box i got for my '80 corvette 2 years ago, but sold the vette before installing. i did look at "adapters" on some of my searching, but frankly, i've thrown so much money fixing other problems in the last month & 1/2, (not to mention the driver's side window i haven't done yet): http://forums.aaca.org/f116/new-reatta-owner-nc-324733.html i need to take a break from spending much until i take care of the window. any suggestions? thanks... NCReatta
Kerry, I believe I may have a decent set or two of the early style rear speakers. You can have them for the price of shipping. I'll have to check and see what I have.If you are looking to just install your 6x9s, I have those brackets too. Those are a bit harder to find though. Also, regarding your window, I'm assuming you're speaking of the metal piece that is normally riveted to the bottom of the window? If you'd like to take a trip up here sometime, we can work on the speakers and the window. Let me know.
wws944
Corvanti - rotted foam is a leading cause of speakers going bad. You can get replacement foam surrounds and rebuild your existing speakers. A web search will find many vendors, however one that I have used (for my old McIntosh home speakers) is: Speaker Parts - Newfoam, Speaker Repair, Speaker Parts, Speaker Foam, Replacement Speakers It isn't hard, but is a bit time consuming. You basically scrape off all the old rotted foam, cut off the dust cap in the middle of the cone, and shim the voice coil to center it in the magnetic gap. Then glue the new surround on, remove the shims, and glue a new dust cap on.Alternatively, you could simply replace the speakers with any of many aftermarket alternatives. On the 6x9s, the rear speakers in a '88-'89 are round. However the ones in a '90-'91 coupe are 6x9s. (Convertibles have 4x10s.) So the easiest thing is to find a set of the boxes from a '90-'91 and install them in your earlier car. Guest Corvanti
getting ready to start tearing out the rear (again) to replace the right rear speaker, in the next day or so. was hoping i'd hear about a replacement speaker that might be available, by now - the 6" woofer, but haven't...i found the "Metca 72-4500 speaker harness" in stock at the local "Best Buy". was wondering if y'all knew of a 6" speaker that would fit the screw holes of the original woofer. if not, i'll go back to the 6X9 speaker idea, and maybe try to fabricate something to hold it, or find a later enclosure that works, if the price is something i can afford right now...the left rear speaker is ok, and the fronts need replacing, but i may wait on that until i do something with the drivers side power window sash channel repair.i'm just looking for something that sounds "ok". i have a amped sub-woofer, the 6x9's, etc. etc. here if i wanted to go that way. other than a non-factory sound system with speaker replacements a few years ago, i really haven't done a whole lot of car audio since i was putting 8-track players & speakers when i was a "mere yout"...
