krazykat
I am in the process of replacing the rear end in my '29 Presidentas the one in the car has a broken ring gear. The car came witha spare rear end. While in the change process, I noticed thatit's a little different. For one it's an inch narrower and the differ- ential is slightly smaller, among other things. It's of a similar vint-age but it's different so I can't use it. I have two questions. Where can I get a replacement ring and pinion to install (preferably with higher ratio) and secondly, howcan I go about identifying the spare unit I have sitting on the floor of my garage?thanks
Guest stude8
I think reproduction ring & pinion for 1931 Studebaker President 8 was made for Floyd Quinnell a few years ago, maybe Rex Miltenberger in Niles, MI can direct you to the source.Your spare rear end could be either Commander or Dictator model that would look similar but be smaller in width and axle lengths. Is your car equipped with steel wire spoke wheels or wood spoke wheels? They would have different brake drums as well as wheel attachment mechanicals.Stude8
krazykat
My car is a state sedan with wire wheels. I did notice that the drums on the spareunit look the same. I'll measure to be sure. My car's rear measures 50" backing plate to plate and the spare measures about 49"...I'll double check that too. I waswondering if I should look for some numbers to identify...I don't see any visible tagsso perhaps cast or stamped.
krazykat
To answer Stude8, my car is a state sedan with wire wheels. Regarding the spare rearend, I can't say what the original wheels were but I did re-measure and found that be-tween backing plates, it measures 47 3/8" and has 14" drums. My car came with a coupleof incorrect wire wheels. They are forty spoke and though likely Studebaker, they arenot President. So, you are likely correct about the rear end as it's possible that the wheelsand rear end are off the same car...Commander or Dictator. They are 20" wheels.
