Ammeter question

So Bob gave me a correct ammeter in need of repair so I’m having a crack at making it work.  The needle fell apparat when I was cleaning it up but Matt had a couple of spares from a later model and it turns out that the guts are the same in all of them.  The face was beyond repair so I’m having a go at making a replacement.  Matt had some white paint and I got a decal printing kit from fleabay and think I may be able to re-do it.

Disassembling the ammeter.  The bezel was a little rusty but hopefully it will come up ok with a few coats of nickel.

The needle was a bit damaged and snapped when I tried straightening.

Attempting to make the new makers details on a decal.

Putting the decals on

decals on with a clear coat to seal them.  You can see them but I think they will blend in when behind the glass.  I swapped the charge and discharge as I’ve swapped my system over to negative earth (and the wiring wasn’t long enough to swap).

Surprisingly large number of parts.

Got the casings and fittings plated so started putting it back together today.

All the pieces laid out in order of assembly - just missing the bezel (Matt’s plating it for me) and the glass retaining ring didn’t make it through plating (too much rust and just a few pieces came back).

Attached the coil and posts first.  Gave it a coat of insulating varnish to stop any shorts if the needle or face contact the coil.

attached the needle assembly.  Gave the needle a tiny drop of clock oil and it moves nicely.  Gave it a quick test and it was working perfectly but needle was moving in the wrong direction - was thinking I’d have to redo the face but luckily the magnet can be removed and rotated which swaps the direction.  I could also swap the cables but they were quite tight and may not have stretched.

Attached the face - needed a slight adjustment of the needle to stop it rubbing and make sure it was “zeroed”.

Fitted back in the case with the mounting bracket - just needs the insulating washers added.

nice work I’m speechless. 😳

Thanks mate, pretty sure you could do it with your eyes closed!  Don’t stress with the bezel, whenever you get a chance.

and thanks for the white paint!!

Finished off my ammeter rebuild today and fitted to the car.  Works well and looks great - thanks Bob for the parts and Matt for the nickel plating.  Unfortunately the bezel damaged a little when I was re fitting (was too thin from rust) so I’ll probably try and make a new one out of brass.

And thanks to Bob for the ignition switch and choke - I’ve now got a respectable looking dash.  Still need to do the oil pressure gauge face and decals for the Speedo face but that can wait till winter;)

That actually looks like some dodge’y Nickle plating there mate you better give it back to me and I’ll do it again for you.

Haha, no - nickel is fine mate, I screwed it when I squashed it a bit when I was pressing it back together - the metal was very thin.
