When the clutch is out there is a grawl in the clutch-transmission area. With the clutch in there is still some grawl but not very much and it is intermittent. I have had the transmission checked out with a good transmission shop and it is ok. The throw-our bearing is ok and the pilot bearing seems ok (don't know how to get it out to look at it). Clutch plate looks good. Any suggestions where the noise is coming from and how tight should the clutch plate be before I reinstall the transmission. Should there be any movement in the clutch plate. After I removed the transmission, I could reach through and there was some movement in the clutch plate.

Don't know if there is much difference between my 1931 Dodge and your 1929, but my clutch disc does not move when the clutch is bolted onto the flywheel. I believe that it should not move unless the clutch is depressed.

If you did not remove the pressure plate from the flywheel and you can move the clutch disc by reaching through the fingers of the pressure plate you have found at least one of your problems. The clutch disc is bad or the pressure plate is worn and or out of adjustment. Does the whole clutch disc move or just the center hub? Some of the early clutch discs had the splined hub solidly attached to the disc. Later clutch discs have a spring loaded splined hub. If you have the later style the springs may be your problem. You need to take the pressure plate off and look at your parts. You may have broken springs in the pressure plate. You will be able to see that pilot bushing much better also. It is good practice to mark the flywheel and pressure plate so you can put the pressure plate back in the same position as it was, just in case the assembly was balanced. One more thing to look at is the preload on the pressure plate springs. The adjusting nuts should be at the same height visually. The actual setting of the preload on the springs is not done by eye but you may find wild varience in spring adjustment. That would be a clue that you should get the pressure plate adjusted or replaced. Good luck with your project, Terry

Thanks to both of you. I do believe the clutch plate needs to be tightened. The clutch looks good and it does not have springs but has a solid center. I am in the process of re-installing the transmission. I hope this fixes my problem. Thanks again.
