Temperature Gauge Capillary Tube

Recommended Posts

About a year ago on this web site I read about a method used to bond the copper capillary line to the glass tube for a King Sealy temperature gauge.

I have searched with different criteria, but the document I read does not pop up. Can some one point me in the right direction?

Curt,

I remember the posting well but can't find it either. It was 12 months ago or more. Arround that time, I needed the temp guage in my Cord repaired. I sent it to Bob's Speedo in Michigan, had it back 3 weeks later as promised. I was very happy with the price and service and I avoid sending things "out" whenever I can.

I wrote it, and probably the reason you cannot find it is that at the upgrading of the forum software, its identification of the roughly first 5-600 posts that I had contributed changed from "Ivan Saxton" to "Ivan-Saxton", and no-one seemed to be willing or able to re-integrate the two or explain how to do that. Because to purpose I spend considerable time contributing to this forum is to share useful knowledge, it is disappointing if anything I have thus contributed becomes inaccessible.

First you need to screen the part of the tube that you do not need to etch and copper. Plastic tape wrapping should be fine.

Etch by grit-blastin wit suitable Aluminium Oxide or Silicon Carbide grit.

Rub graphite powder onto the etched surface.

Electroplate copper onto the etched, graphited surface, and soft solder the connecting tube to that.

Was the glass vial comprimised ? Did Bob's speedo actually 'sweat' a new capillary tube into a new glass tube?
