57 Chevy question

I have a friend that just bought a 1957 Chevrolet WINDOWED Sedan Delivery. Now, I thought I have heard of all models of 57's but this one got me. I have been told that they were factory originals. But, the window is not full sized - looks like a "portal" type window. It is about 85% the height of the back side area but only about 50% of the width and looks about centered.

Can someone tell me more about anything like this???

Also, heard that if the 57 came with a rochester carb it had air conditioning. No other carb for AC cars?

Thanks

I'd be willing to bet that ALL '57 Chevys had Rochester carbs . . . 1bbl, 2bbl, 4bbl, 2x4bbl. The Fuel Injection system was also Rochester. I know for sure that ALL '57 Chevys didn't have factory a/c.

Chevy also built 2-dr station wagons that weren't Nomads, too. A normal 2-dr front seat with a rear seat that folded down (as I recall). I believe these were the "Handyman Wagon" models, in 150s, and 210s only.

Head over to . . . Welcome to TriFive.com, 1955 1956 1957 Chevy Forum then scroll down to "Library". There, you'll finf MANY things to look at and download. Might not answer the brand of carburetor question, but from the tag numbers, they look like Rochester numbers to me. Also, at the bottom is a posting with VIN decode information, VIN plate locations on the car (there are many!!), etc.

Enjoy!

Good advice here, that site has more Chevy-specific input than we might have here. 1957 Pontiacs are my subject and I can say all 2bbl and most 4bbl carbs were Rochesters. SOME 4bbl carbs were Carter AFBs, Chevys probably had a similar deal. In other words:

all A/C cars may or may not have had Rochester carbs--

but a cars with a Rochester carb did not necessarily have A/C

Good luck, Todd C

I have seen sedan delivery's with a regular wagon tailgate instead of a full liftgate.I've also seen oval windows in the side panels and at the time was told it could be ordered that way.Never underestimate what dealers would do to make a sale.I once had a 56 chevy ambulance (a Meteor) that had a large oval window on one side with a red cross sand etched in the glass, the other side was a panel.

Kiwi, you'd probably get more response in a new thread, but the first thing to check is to see whether your tank's vents are open and functioning.

I don't know offhand if the 57 had a vented or non-vented gas cap. A non-vented cap will have a separate vent tube somewhere on the fuel tank. After 57 years a vent tube could have got stopped up with insect nests or whatever, and this would cause the blowback you're getting as the air displaced by filling the tank has nowhere to go except back out the fill tube.

I will lay some of the blame on modern gasoline as it has different vapor points than old formulas. I have the same issue with a 93 Ford pickup truck when gasoline changes from winter to summer blends and back.
