Guest rjkratzig
My family owns a 1950 Buick Super 4-door sedan that my great-grandparents purchased new in October 1950. So the story goes, the car has--since new--had troubles with the braking system, apparently with problems where the brakes just failed to work whatsoever. Several years ago, we purchased a new master cylinder for the car, and that seemed to alleviate much of the problem. Now, though, after depressing the pedal to the floor, the pedal will not come back to normal. The brakes work and the car will stop, but you have to then pry the pedal back off the floor with your toes so that you can use it again. Is there some sort of spring that could have broken? Fr. Buick
Sounds like your return spring broke - a long, heavy thing that attaches at the point where the brake linkage pivots on the frame. A good hardware store may have something you can play with...
51dyno
If the pedal linkege is not binding it could be crud in the master or wheel cilinder and or broken brake shoe springs.
Pete O
Could also be a matter of adjusting the push rod that works on the master cylinder.
