Guest Mochet
See this thread from a couple years back. Also, the petroliana collectors have experience. See this. You might also try Bar Keeper's Friend cleaner or Softscrub... things that clean porcelain sinks without scratching.Phil
Bhigdog
Twer it me I would use the same thing I use to polish acid etch and VERY FINE scratches from windshields. that would be cerium oxide. It's made to polish glass with out scratching or leaving swirl marks. Somewhere in this forum, I think Chrysler's, I detailed the procedure. That said, I would try it on an unimportant piece first...........Bob
Paul Dobbin
Thanks for the search and the suggestions, but the replys of the previousquestions have not panned out. I see lots of real shiney signs with rust holes in them and I can't get my good ones to shine like that.Any other ideas?
Terry Bond
My guess is the signs you are talking about have been clear-coated to give them the gloss. It's what folks use who restore signs when they have to patch chips or missing pieces. I like the patina of old untouched signs myself.

For just brightening up the sign hand polishing with cerium oxide might do it..................Bob
Paul Dobbin
A local stainless steel polisher told me to use muratic acic to take the rust stains off. It worked!!!! Now it's clean, I'll try the polishing idea.
