alsfarms
Hello,I am looking for a transmission for a project and prefer a GM used product. My question is: Did any GM product use a typical truck 4 speed, with the 4th gear being overdriven? The mid 80's Ford used a Clark 4 speed with OD on 4th gear. I would like to stay with GM if possible. Oh yeah, the GM T-5, as used in the S-10, is not heavy duty enough for my project. Help me out with application, numbers and a trans, if you can.Al
NTX5467
It was quite common for later 1980s Chevy C-10s to have a Getrag 5-speed OD manual. Basically for 1/2 tons with small block V-8s. There were some manual transmissions that went behind the factory 8.0L C30s, but I don't recall who made them, suspecting the top gear was an OD. Hydraulic clutches, too! Of course, after we got the Allison automatics in the HD2500s and up, the manual transmissions quietly faded out of our stock.Just some thoughts,NTX5467
alsfarms
Thanks for your information. Is the Getrag a conventional top shift 5 speed? I could use a 5 speed but not the B-W T-5. The T-5 is not heavy enough.Alan
rhb1999
Did the Muncie SM465 come w/OD?
NTX5467
I believe the "465" trans was "New Process" rather than Muncie. I don't recall any light truck trans being referred to as "Muncie", just car 4-spds.There were some Clark transmissions used by GM, too, in the 1970s. Usually in one ton models, I believe. Might have been one with 5 forward speeds, I believe. The New Process 465 was the "granny gear" 4-speed for many years in GM trucks. Even as far back as the early 1950s until (probably) the 1990s. There was also a Chrysler version for Dodge Trucks. Clark was similar in that they were a vendor that did work for any manufacturer that desired their products. In many cases, the main difference was the particular trans' gear ratios and the OEM-specific bell housing items.Just some thoughts,NTX5467
