Howdy!

Anybody know where to get these little devils from? Or what the inside and outside diameter is, and the length please? Bob's dont seem to have any. We're doing up the steering box thanks to Danny, and we're getting a new steering column gear made. I'll get a price for left and right hand drive ones and keep you posted!

Cheers

I'm surprised you cant adjust the gear over enough to take out the slack. Is your current gear chipped or have a piece out of it ?? I've pulled a few apart and found this to be the case on both the sector wheel and the gear. I'd be interested to know what getting a new one made would cost. I can't see that there is a difference in LHD & RHD.

The adjustment is maxed out Danny.

The worm was chipped, and we fixed it after a fashion by brazing and filing the missing bit. Got us going. I had a look at the restoration photos yesterday to print a worm gear picture for dad to take to the gear place, and compared it to Owen Crequer's NZ one. The thread runs the opposite way! And the sector gear is tilted to the other side as a result. The up side is that it's no big deal for the gear manufacturers to make left or right hand drive ones, once they have all the measurements. I'll keep you posted with regards to cost, etc. Maybe if anyone else need one? Might bring the cost down?

Cheers

In 1939 there were 2 steering box versions for series 40-60: each has different ratio

Steering ratio 19.0:1 (RHD) changed to steering ratio 17.5:1 (RHD) at frame 13439464

Would need to check the documentation but guess LHD is the same

I thinks yours is an early short chassis so 19.0:1 (assuming it has not changed in the last 70 years)

More cars would have made been with the 17.5:1

General Motors has announced a recall for large vehicles, notably large passenger vans and SUVs, across several of its brands. The issue is with the Pitman shaft, a component in the steering system, which wasn’t hardened sufficiently to tolerate prolonged operation. The shaft can potentially break while in operation, which can cause the driver to lose the ability to the steer the vehicle.
