danhar1960
You mean it's not $3000 Doesn't seem to be Billy. Seems like a reasonable starting price. I've bought quite a few things from this bloke but alas, this is a bit big to bring back to Sydney in a suit case. :)Danny

danhar1960
The answer I got was "It's just the picture, there is no crack".I'll be standing down on this one.Hopefully it'll be quite a score for somebody. Good luck with it.Danny

1939_Buick
Its the left hand drive version anyway, so only of use to Grant (in Aust - NZ) or those in USA, Canada etcIt it is NOS and nut rusted inside a good by for someone Edited February 10, 2012 by 1939_buick (see edit history)
Guest Grant Magrath
I'm pretty certain we have enough bits to rebuild ours. Still..............!CheersGrant
danhar1960
It's the internals that count and they would be suitable for LHD or RHD. I currently have more than enough parts and several gearboxes. I hope it goes to someone that will get some use out of it rather than just sitting in a shed for another 70 years. danhar1960
Still seems to be at a very reasonable price.Danny
Guest Grant Magrath
True.Dad's starting to foam at the mouth! Once that red mist descends, he's capable of bidding himself to death. He's a worry.CheersGrant
danhar1960
In this day and age of electronic bidding programs I would figure it wouldn't move that much until the last few seconds.Danny
Guest Grant Magrath
What's with those bidding programmes? My old sure fire way of getting something was to put a stupidly high top bid in. Trouble was, it could backfire if someone else did the same thing. You could end up paying $600 for a radio knob.CheersGrant
danhar1960
I gave up on the bid early, bid high business years ago. Too many times I'd bid high just to have some shill (sh!the@d) run the price up. $10, then 12.50, then $15, then $17.50, then $20.......... Hardly a genuine bidder. Bidding schedulers let you set your genuine maximum price and forget. FORGET being the operative word !!!! Soooooo many times I'd just forget the item was ending and miss out or I was somewhere I just couldn't get to a computer to sit there and watch the countdown and a lot of the time the thing finished in the middle of the night. I'm over all of that, now it's just set and forget. If you lose it's because your bid was just not high enough in which case you wouldn't have won it anyway.Danny
Guest Grant Magrath
Good news and bad news.Good news was that we won the auction. Bad news was that after the auction, the seller told us he got it wrong, and the box was in fact rebuilt, not NOS. Decided not to go through with the purchase (first time I've ever done that on eBay) as the gearbox was misrepresented. But good on the vendor for being up front about it. danhar1960
Well that's a bummer Grant !!! :(Guess it was too good to be true. It would have been a good buy.In situations like this I always console myself by thinking of the money I've saved.Danny Edited February 18, 2012 by danhar1960 Didn't proof it before hitting go button :( (see edit history)

jvelde
Well Grant, congratulations on both counts. I was watching the bids and suspecting you were in the mix somewhere. Sorry it didn't turn out to be "as advertised", just good that you aren't being held to the bid. Better luck on the next one.John
Guest Grant Magrath
Thanks John, but I think we'd be better off rebuilding our own now, which was the plan all along until this one came up. We have pretty much all of the parts to use thanks to a very good friend. It just would have been nice to have installed a new one right out of the box.CheersGrant
danhar1960
I looked through the bidding and once again we had someone creeping the price up. Maybe I'm just an old cynic but I have reservations about the genuineness of bidding 11 times in small increments each time. Danny
1939_Buick
I am not surprised as the input shaft looked to me a little worn.I have friend near Flint, MI who could/would have stripped it for you and sent the partsHave not looked at your high bid, but if all the internal parts were NOS it may have been worth it.I have bought part from that vendor before and seem an OK guy/galI looked through the bidding and once again we had someone creeping the price up. Maybe I'm just an old cynic but I have reservations about the genuineness of bidding 11 times in small increments each time. DannyI do that (but not this time). It does flush out the high bid of the guy above you and how much they increment by. Guest Grant Magrath
All good and well, but we thought we were bidding on an NOS one. It appears to be a genuine mistake on the vendor's part, so no hard feelings. CheersGrant

I think most would have relied largely on the description. I too have got a lot from this bloke and not had a problem. Danny
Guest strait8
With that much inerest in the 39 xmisn I may have to list mine for sale.Out of a car that was street-rodded,ran very well but slipped out of 3rd but finger pressure on shifter fixed that. Likely week spring above ball on shaft. pm if interested. 40 special.
danhar1960
I think the interest was mainly in it supposedly being a "NOS" transmission.Danny
Guest Grant Magrath
Final twist in the saga! Bought some distributor springs for my Corvette off a guy in the North Island who, I just found out, placed a bid on the very same gearbox for a friend of his! I just want to say again, that this was an honest mistake on the vendors part, and I can highly recommend him.CheersGrant
