Question on '39 running boards

The subject is a 1939 Century 4-dr. sedan in my garage. It has new running board covers and there is a space of about an inch between the rear end of each running board, and the bottom leading edge of the rear fender. Is there a moulding or piece of rubber or something that goes there to fill the space, or should there be a space at all?

Pete,

My '39 Business Coupe has a space of about an inch both at the front and rear of the runningboards. Bear in mind the rear of my originals are pretty ragged, but the fronts are rolled over and very finished looking, so I am sure that is the original look.

Space. The rubber is glued down over the edges, and I believe the rear end has a metal reinforcement bracket.

Based on this photograph, there is a gap.

My dad and I were talking about this issue on the phone when I saw your inquiry. Yesterday, I was ebaying a 1939 steering wheel while he was working on one via the telephone -- we were working on the same one! It is a small world.
