Major Firewall leak in my 47

Now that I have been under the dash rewiring my 1947 Super I have noticed a space between the steering column and the firewall big enough to put a small dog through. Looking at the outside (Engine side) of the fireall, it seems like there should be a metal plate around the steering column to help block hot air.

Could someone with a similar era car take a look and see if I am imagining things ? What does block the hot air around the steering column on the firewall from frying your feet ?

I know there is a rubber plate inside, but that doesn't stop it all. I have shoved towels and other assorted rags in there to help, but would like to do it right.

Its not bad now, but in the summer it got to be 116 at my feet.

Bill,

My '49 has a rubber fitting that fits tightly around the steering column on the inside of the firewall, about 6" wide by 10" tall. On the engine side of the firewall, there is a sheet metal plate that fits behind the firewall metal, and has some insulation between it and the steering column, but even with the insulation, the metal plate is within 1/8th of an inch of the steering column, so you must have something missing. Can take photos, if you wish.

Hi Bill, Greetings from Howell MI, just outside Flint. Buick issued a factory bulletin regarding unusual heat in the front compartment of 46 and 47. I'll copy them and email them to you if you wish, also can add them to this inquiry.

Bill, I have the same problem. It is somewhat bearable in the summer with the windows open but it comes in handy on those chilly nights or if you use it into the fall. I guess that is the difference between Buffalo and Austin.
