Dave Mellor NJ
I don't think you can get a packet of sugar for 20c today. From LowKat on Hamb
Dave@Moon
Based on the movie on the marquis, this photo was taken in 1934. Adjusting for straight inflation, 20 cents in 1934 is the equivalent of $3.22 today. That's roughly today's cost of a coffee, Egg McMuffin and a hash brown. DAVE A
There are still a couple of local diners where you can get an egg, home fries, and toast for 2.50 . Up til the beginning of this year, you got coffee included in that but that went away this year.
padgett
Maybe in Vegas...Thirty years later, meat, veg, & all the hush puppies & iced tea you wanted was 77 cents in Durham. oldcarfudd
I'm surprised the woman was wearing a pants outfit in 1934. I thought city women were still in skirts or dresses then. Shows yet another thing I don't know!Gil Fitzhugh, Morristown, NJ
padgett
Seems a little staged with those heels. Today she would be dressed to the nines but wearing walking shoes.Suspect it is a little later than 1934.
JD in KC
According to IMDB.com, the movie on the marquee was released in the USA sometime in September, 1936. I also didn't think slacks on women were very common until the 40's. But I wasn't around at the time.
padgett
Almost looks like MGM or Universal studios. Seems like a number of anachronisms there. Cars too old, obscure english movie, clothing styles seem newer, was it common for a lady to have a wrist watch ? Where did the picture come from please ? dalef62
Lady in background wearing a sunvisor style hat and stampings on the sidewalks??? Might be staged?
Dave@Moon
According to IMDB.com, the movie on the marquee was released in the USA sometime in September, 1936. Most other sources online say 1934, i.e.: Nine-Days-a-Queen - Trailer - Cast - Showtimes - NYTimes.comIt was probably released in the U.K. in 1934, and here in 1936. Guest Siegfried
I recall a friend saying a few years back that everything is up approximately 100 to 150 per cent of what it was in the 60ty's. Gasoline at 30.9 cents in 1966 versus gasoline at 3.29.9 today here in Pa. And forget the smokes price. WOW! from .5 to %.75 per pack. Addiction has it costs. Glad I quit.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
