OT - Info about ReattaOwner.com

Recommended Posts

After I responded to a post in the Buy/Sell forum, I received a few emails/messages from some of the members here wanting to know my intentions. I was surprised that anyone even noticed. There were some concerns that I was selling my car and going to close ReattaOwner.com.

Just to let everyone know, I have no immediate plan to shut down my website even if do I sell my Reatta. If I sell my '88 model it is my intention to buy a '91 model... or possibly a '90 model. I have always wanted a '91 but I can't afford to buy one without selling my car.

I will have to make a decision sometime early next year about the future of ReattaOwner.com. The software I use on my website is outdated and may stop working due to technical issues beyond my control. I will need to do lots of work on the website that will amount to building a new website from scratch and then transferring all the information on the current website over to it. I'm willing to do that if I think enough Reatta owners use the website and find it to be a useful resource that helps them keep their Reattas going. I can see that there are lots of visitors to the website but how useful they find it is hard to gauge.

I find it very useful. I will certainly contribute some $$ to keep it going if that's what you need. If you just need some flat out help on the technical side, I can help with that too.

Just let me know! :)

Thanks for offering Marck. I appreciate it. Hope I didn't come across as asking for money. I just wanted to let the forum know my thoughts about ReattaOwner.com and how it relates to me selling my car. Me selling my car won't effect the website but lack of interest in the website will.

I found it to be a great help, there quirks and oddits that you can not find in the manual, actual hands on is the best. Keep up the good work!!

It is refreshing to find people that actually work on there own cars, people around here look at me like some kind of a wierdo because I like to work on mine.

Ronnie your site is very helpful to me. I use it to gather information on projects I'm about to get into. It has saved me much time and skinned knuckles: well, I still get skinned knuckles, but I enjoy it more.

Thank you and please keep up the good work.

Getting visitors to respond to whether your site is useful is like hoping they will respond with some sort of acknowledgement if the advice you gave them worked when they need help repairing their car. Most times they don't...

Sometimes people do come back here to the forum and tell us we helped them solve their problem. It is satisfying to know we were able to help.

Thirteen pages on your site are bookmarked in a sub-folder (called "Reatta Owner's Journal") in my Reatta bookmark folder (for future reference). Might not need them yet, but I figure I'll need them someday. Let us know if you shut down the site so I can print a bunch of stuff beforehand :) Your site is an institution.

I had never considered selling CDs with information from my website. Would it even be appropriate? Forum members posting information here, me copying it to my website, and then selling it back to you??

I can see how it might be beneficial to have all the information from the website on a laptop when traveling. If the website was pure html it would be easy to do but my website is mainly based on the PHP scripting language and MySql databases. Both require server side software to function.

If there was enough interest I could probably build a pure html website on a CD, just for the tutorials, that could be viewed on any computer with a web browser. It would just take some time.

I think if you just covered your costs with your time and material (CDs, cases, etc), nobody should have a problem paying for it.

Pay yourself $25/hour to compile the stuff, add in the CDs and cases, then divide that cost by however many you make.

I'd buy one for sure.

I think it is a great idea to sell CD's. I too would buy one.

Also would give you a bit of a cash flow to fund your site upgrade should you decide to do that...

Dave and others,

Some of you have expressed interest in helping out with the website financially. I don't want anyone to think I hang out on this forum for financial gain, I really enjoy posting here, but if anyone wants to help support the ReattaOwner.com website they can do it in two ways:

One is to by using the "Donate Now" button that is on the bottom right side of most pages on ReattaOwner.com.

The other way is if you need parts, and intend to buy them from Amazon.com, please use one of the links on my website to do so. When you do I will get a very small percentage of the cost of the item. It will not cost you anything extra if you do. Even if you don't click on the exact part you need on my website, I will get credit if you go to amazon from my website. Look for the Amazon "Save On Auto Parts" banner on the right side of each page or click on one of the parts displayed there. By doing this you get a great deal on your parts [usually with free shipping] and you will be helping ReattaOwner.com at the same time. Thanks to those who have already done so!

I like Ronnie's site. I refer to it often. The only problem with Ronnie's site is that it doesn't generate enough revenue for Ronnie. Marck brings up a good point which I believe is the elephant in the room. Ronnie needs to install the mechanisms for his site to generate revenue for himself. Ronnie deserves to be compensated for his efforts.

Microcash is still the bugaboo in the Internet. I recall people talking about the difficulty of generating a nickle, dime, or quarter. $5 is easy, 5 cents, not so yet if a site could charge 5 cents a visit the revenue could be considerable and the viewers would not notice (much).

Not having knowledge about how ads and referrals can generate money for a website, if Ronnie can install links on his website that can generate money for him to most of the commercial car parts vendors we tend to deal with (Advance, NAPA, RockAuto, GMPartsDirect, etc.) I'd be all over that.

Don't buy alot from Amazon, but would be happy to go thru Ronnie's site when I do.

Does any Amazon purchase made via this link count, or just auto parts, or just select parts via a special offer?

I appreciate your comments. The only links I have are to Amazon. I don't know if it is possible with the vendors you list or not.

Any amazon purchase counts as long as you enter amazon through a link on ReattaOwner.com. So far not much income has been generated from it. About $15 in six weeks. Not exactly getting rich. :)

Thanks to everyone who's used the links so far!

I know now to keep you in mind the next time I do order anything from Amazon.

I may order an accumulator or two if funds permit and that deal Barney mentioned is still around.

Let us know if you can do a similar arrangement with anyone else.

Least we can do is help you help the cause. A few extra mouse clicks never hurt anyone.
