40's 4 door Plymouth

I purchased a farmsite that has a old Plymouth in the woods. The previous owner told me the year but I forget. I believe a 46? It's a 4 door, say something like special delux on the side in front of doors. Car is in somewhat solid shape but has been sitting outside for 40 years. I assume it's scrap but didn't want to recycle something so old without looking into it. If anyone is interested just let me know. Thanks

It's very difficult for the unitiated to tell what model of Plymouth they have from the 40s because they were basically all the same from 1941 to 1949. The 1st model of 1949 was still the same body as the 1941 and before the change happened to the 'inverted bathtub' era starting in late 1949. If the tags are still there, there will be a tag on the firewall, engine side, saying if it is a 'P11' to 'P15'. The 6 cylinder engine will have a strip of letters and numbers on the block at the front left, top, corner. They will start with 'P15' etc. and that will narrow things down, although they made P15s from 1946 to early 1949 so then we would have to have the serial number off the right hand door jamb tag to fix the actual year.

Right front door hinge post for pre-WW2, left front door hinge post for post-WW2 for that serial number tag. The serial number is all numeric, no letters at all.

My book shows it to be a 1948 Special DeLuxe made in Detroit. Someone will DEFINITELY want it. Don't scrap it if you can possibly help it.

Concur. It looks a lot better than I guessed with the "old Plymouth in the woods" introduction.

Thanks for the info guys. I will hold on to it for a while in case anybody wants it. Any idea what it's worth? Don't want to rip anybody off, just a fair price.

Ok, I can take more/better pics. What areas of the car are important to see close up? I will find any dents or blemishes but if anyone has any areas looked at in particular let me know

The most important ares I would photograph would be the floor of the front and rear foot area (under the carpet/floor mat) and the inside of the trunk. Any rusted out areas need to be described and photographed.

Here are more pics. Sorry if they aren't the greatest. Floor under driver and passenger front are pretty far gone. Holes and pretty soft where it's still there. Found 1 hole on driver side under feet of rear seat, couldn't see any holes on passenger side in rear but I would generally say the floor is in pretty rough shape. Trunk doesn't seem to have any holes but it does have rust. I'm sure it's also a little thin. 1 dent in the roof behind drivers door, 1 dent in back of trunk lid that looks like it would pop right out, driver side rear quarter has some dents along the bottom. You can see corners are rusting through on quarters in corners nearest the doors. Doors seem solid, interior is bad. Seats are there and in place but the upholstery is mostly gone. Hood is ok but seems a little weak around the hinges. Grill has a dent on passenger side. Frame seems solid but has been resting in the dirt for a long time, I'm sure that's what got the floor.
