Water pump

Having stripped out the water pump (6v 2unit) it is obvious that a new shaft, bearings and packing glands etc. will be required but what concerns me most is that the impeller housing has rusted away inside. I fear that this, unattended, will in itself render the rebuild a waste of time as the pumping efficiency may be greatly impaired. Am I correct in assuming the worst or is the housing repairable in some way? Vern where are you?
