Guest lyaconwolf
I am towing a 5x8 box trailer with my 2000 jeep cherokee with my harley heritage inside the trailer. We have done this many times with no issues, however I am now thinking there must be something I can do with the drag. The trailer is maybe 2feet higher and like a brick wall. My question is this if I buy an areodynamic car top carrier will it deflect the wind over my trailer and save me gas millage? I guess my thought process is that it may work like a wind deflector on top of a semi. Thanx for your time and opinions/ Jim
trimacar
Look on Ebay or Google for "trailer wind deflector" and you'll find kits for wings to be mounted on top of your vehicle that will deflect air over trailer. You can also get fiberglas bumps for the front top of the trailer that make it more friendly for towing.
Steve Braverman
Whatever fuel economy gains you get will probably take 50k towing miles to pay for itself.
Guest Jim_Edwards
If you tow that trailer frequently your best bet would be to swap it out for one with a "VEE" shape in the front. Will reduce drag a whole lot more than some deflector, plus you might gain a bit of storage area.
Shop Rat
Just a suggestion, before you buy a deflector talk to some folks that use the deflectors and find out how they feel about them now that they have one.
MCHinson
Probably the easiest way to save fuel while towing is to slow down...not that I particularly follow my own advice on this one...
Guest lyaconwolf
Ok thanx to all for the advise, after looking into it further with the advise of a deflector etc. I found a benchmark with totally streamlined truck trailer and the ave. gain was 1 mpg and the cost for total makeover was over 15k. LOL It sure would take alot of trips to make that pay. I probably agree with the slow down... Im always in a hurry to get there so Im doing 70-80 I can prob make up 2mpg if I do 60 LOL thanx again for all the help
Paul Dobbin
The fuel savings % will be greater than the % of reduced speed.A good trade!
