With the steering wheel removed - the column separates just above the gearbox - the steering shaft is 3 foot long roughly so it takes some clearance under the car to get it all out.

Post a picture of your setup and I will mark the area for you.

Thanks for the info Ron. Will I have To drop the a arm for clearance? Would it be possible to replace the seal on the steering box without taking it off the car?

I am sorry I can not be specific for the 53 caddy. I pulled the ps setup out of a 53 Olds and put it in a 55 Olds but since the two are kissing cousins it should apply.

Again pictures? Which seal as there are many seals used on the ps system?

I have come to the conclusion that this manual box will have to be repaired on the car. The motor mounts prohibit the box and steering shaft from sliding out. These are not the original mounts, and not sure if the original ones would have blocked it too. Since I didn't get too many replies to my question, I'm thinking these boxes are not to be removed for simple repair. Thanks Ron for your input.

hi lowrange, no, the original oldsmobile rocket V8 single front motor mount, located right behind and below the harmonic balancer wouldn't have interfered with removing the manual or power steering gearbox and steering coluum. look under your driver's side of the carpet, you'll find a floor plate below the steering coluum, and around the brake pedal. with this floor plate removed, and the steering box unbolted from it's mounting holes in the frame, can you not then remove the complete steering box and coluum ?, charles coker, 1953 pontiac tech advisor.

Charles is right on about the floor plate.

Also the column bracket at the bottom of the instrument panel needs to be removed to prevent scratching up the column and to provide more working room.

The 53 floor plate is different between power brakes and manual. Also the 53 floor plate is different than the floor plates used on the 54 through 56 Olds due to the wider bodies introduced in 54. And again the floor plates are different between 54-56 for manual and power brakes.
