Desert Sand vs. Arctic White

Looking for a good example of an original or correct color painted Desert Sand Riviera. Mine has been repainted and I thought it was white but has the color code "RR". I'm thinking the Desert Sand should be more beige than my car.

Oh and I have looked at swatches on Team Buick but wasn't satisfied with my monitor's colors.

A while back I bought a 1963 buick color chart from a guy on ebay,he probobly has other years as well.I wont give his name as he advertises these as mint condition which it was far from.When I left a neuteral feed back he threw a huge immature fit and eventually offered to send me another one if I sent him mine back and paid shipping both ways.I didnt.

These color charts are great to have and are not as rare as you would think.

Im glad I have one as I was considering a repaint in bamboo cream (a red interior limits exterior color choices)only to find it was not offered in 63 so I guess Ill stick with the common arctic white after all.

When you paint your car don't forget the strip of painted metal above the quarter window. A lot of painters tape off the whole top and that little strip never gets done.

I painted my car in 1980 and noticed it after. I plan to fix it this winter when I do all my deferred maintenance.

So I have been looking at Rivieras since '81 to see how many forgot that strip. AMAZING how many!

OK, guys, go out there and check your car. I'm number one.

@ Bernie, My car also has been repainted and that strip was also missed. Since the re-paint was to a different color, it shows... #2 ... I also noticed a white '63 this year at a show that was re-painted and that same strip was missed as well... #3

@ JB, I have also wondered about RR vs CC... I have seen a few advertised as Desert Sand but looked very white on the computer screen to me. I just need to see one first hand.

@ Mark, I also bought a set of paint chips from probably that same guy... they were not good quality and very faded. They are unusable other than a reference point. I couldn't use them to match any colors. For example, Desert Sand "R" was more gray/green than brown.

OK Riviera People: That little piece that goes by the 1/4 window is very difficult to remove and unless you are going pedal to da medal with the restoration I say skip it. Here's what's involved.....

remove the back seat

remove the arm rests

remove the door cards

drill out the screws from the fuzzies

re-attach new fuzzies to the stainless trim piece

re-attach new fuzzies to the door card

re-install after the car is painted

While everything is apart you can remove the inspection cover to the window mechanism and clean and lube it too.

or...............you can just sand carefully on the ridge of the 1/4 panel with that stainless piece still in place. I'll never tell, Mitch.

I've had those pieces off on my car and it can be a pain to get those suckers off !

I don't remember the 64 white, but when repainting a 62 skylark convert some years ago, I remember the factory white was not as bright as I wanted, so had it done in the then available Riviera convertible white, bright, bright, bright.

This 64 has saddle interior, and my first 64 was bronze mist with that interior, so may bo back to that when the time comes.
