Johnny Nick
I started to torque the Head bolts on my 1929 Commander and in my search for torque spec. I found two different spec. one was for 57 lbs the other was for 90 to 95 lbs can anyone tell me which one is right. Johnny Nick
Gary_Ash
The commercial torque wrench wasn't invented until 1936, hence no printed torque values in old manuals. What size are the head bolts (diameter and threads/inch)? It may also depend on the type of gasket you are using.
nzcarnerd
It might depend on what has been done to the engine. I recall that about 20 years ago when I put the head back on my 1928 1/2 GE Dictator that I found a source that recommended 65 ft/lb. The head had been planed .020 to get it straight but the block had not. I had to take the head bolts down to 85 ft/lb to get it to seal - and put Chemiweld in it as well. For as long as I continued to drive it it gave no problems. The demise of the engine a few years later - caused by a con rod breaking - was unrelated.
