Guest dbsbdesoto
Hello. If any of you can help me find a North east electric SBH 6404 bearing with brush holder end it will help. Can't believe how bad the end broke. It was on a rebuilt starter of a few years ago. It is on a 1927 dodge brothers 128. The whole end broke . What would cause this? (age) Thanks dean
nearchoclatetown
The end of the starter is potmetal, doubt you or the rebuilder did anything wrong. It just happens with age. There is someone makeing new castings, I believe out of aluminum.
Guest 1930
Try this, they have them listed under 27 28 Senior, I dont know off hand if it is the same starter. Vintage and Classic Reproductions - Dodge PartsSave what is left of the old cast and if needed you can have a new one machined possibly if needed. Paul Bohlig
In my limited experience the original center plate as well as the end plate which held the brushes were made of pot metal. So, when the engine did not start and kicked back the center plate was made to stop the energy of the starter drive gear on kick back. Since the center plate was pot metal it broke causing the shaft on kick back to brake the end plate. Agree with 1930 is correct on the solution. Costly. Also, covered in the DBC News on CD's. There was an article on the main compnents. Will check some more.Paul
Paul Bohlig
The starters are covered in the DBC News pp. 18-21 in the JUN/Jul 2006 issue which should be on the CD for sale from the DB Club. Both Myers and Romar each carry the center plate and the end cover made with modern metals. They are at:Myers Early DodgeROMAR Home PageAlso in the DBC list of vendors in the AUG/SEPT 2007 DBC News:Ace Alternator & Starter ExchangeGlenn CheaneyWichits, KS800-843-2211Ace Alternator & Starter ExchangeI have not used him but some members have recommended him. Also, I have a complete SBH 6404 with a modern center plate but original pot metal end plate. Heavy to ship but I would rather not part out.Hope this helps.Paul
Guest dbsbdesoto
Thanks all for your input. Paul you were right on. I took the starter apart and sure enough the center plate with bearing was broke. There was no pieces in the starter. The part of the plate that was left was about 1 inch wide and had the two screw holes and bearing in it. So it looks like the man that rebuilt it put the old center plate back in broken. I guess out of sight out of mind. So guess it would bend enough to break out the end piece. The castings are available but at a high cost for the two. They are only the casting you have to furnish the rest. I may have found an old starter with the end and center intact. Will let you know how it all works out. Thanks again for the info.
