Guest geoedgerton
What is the correct engine/valve cover color (and engine decals) for a 1940 Special? Also, the previous owner installed a PCV valve which seems to work ok---anybody know a rationale for doing that? I figure on changing it back unless I am missing something here. Lastly, where on the frame is the serial number located?
danhar1960
I think it would be to do what the name of the valve suggests. It will positively ventilate the crankcase and burn off the crankcase fumes. I would imagine it would help with a fuming engine.Danny
Guest Grant Magrath
I believe a dark blue/gray is the color for the engine. Decals are at Bob's Automobilia. Danny's nailed the PCV question. Frame number is on the frame. Haha! Sorry. Isn't it down by the starter motor? There's a thread on here somewhere dealing with it's location.CheersGrant
Guest geoedgerton
Grant and Danny:Thanks for the responses. Pretty elementary questions I know, but just got this car and am trying to figure out a lot of stuff and what all the resources are. Thanks!George

danhar1960
George,Just on that frame ID, Grant is correct. It's down by the starter. Look directly behind the battery for a little stamped aluminium plate riveted to the chassis. It is also stamped directly into the chassis but you'll never see it unless you remove the body and have the chassis sand blasted. I see you are after the to top part of the air cleaner. Something to watch out for there is that there are 2 sizes. The difference is in the lengths of the throat that connects to the carburettor. WDO Carter carbs are shorter than Stromberg and as such use the longer throat. You can cut down a Carter WDO size for a Stromberg but a Stromberg type will be too short for a Carter WDO type. What carby do you have ?? I'll be out in the shed over the weekend and get a few measurements if needed. Danny
Guest geoedgerton
Danny, thanks for the info. Fortunately, this car has the Stromberg so I will be able to make use of either version of the aircleaner. Good stuff to know! I'll look tomorrow and see if the frame tag is there.George
Guest gossir00
The correct engine /valve head cover color for a 1940 Buick is gray. 1940 Buick valve head cover decal is orange.
