Guest Double M
I bought brand new gas charged lifts, a few months ago, installed them...... but when I pull that lever under the dash, nothing happens, it seems... then I move the car over a bump and presto... It pops up! Sometimes when I slam the door it also opens after pulling the lever. This is really annoying, as I have to open the hood often to manually raise my headlight. So when it gets dark, I have to pull over, pull the lever, go find a bump to run over... just to open the damn hood! GRRRRR!!!
harry yarnell
Lube the latch mechanism.Sometimes when this happens to me, after pulling the release lever, I'll hit the center front of the hood with my fist. Usually that will release the latch. May have to pull the lever a second time.
Guest NEMO
You can try lubing the hinges to the hood, there is a large spring that pops the hood up is it there?
Barney Eaton
First I thought maybe they didn't have lube in NY but Nemo suggested lube so maybe they do.
padgett
There is a spring up front by the latch to pop the hood the first inch.
Rawja
Lube the latch mechanism. Lithium grease.
DAVES89
Ditto to the lube on the latch mechanism. Also stretch the spring a little bit. Another thing to look at is if the cable is pulling on the latch mechanism. If not you may have to rig some spacers on the far side of the cable where it pulls against the latch mechanism. We periodically have to do this on some of the cars we get in when we do car repairs at our church.
Reattatude
Im reading this because having the same symptoms on my 91 coupe. Now for something completely similar....what about a cable (looks like parking brake?) hanging down really low to the ground on my 89 coupe? padgett
Probably is a parking brake.
NCReatta
if it's hanging more than an inch from the bottom of the car, you probably need it adjusted.
Reattatude
Yes its hanging down where its visible from the side. I noticed it the other day looking out at the car from a shop window. Easy to adjust ??
Barney Eaton
Does the parking brake work? If you set the parking brake, does the cable get tighter?living in Indiana, you could have a rusted cable that has broken in the rear and sagged under the door. harry yarnell
The adjuster is back by the crossbeam, and can (will) be a bear to adjust. Rust .
Rawja
On my old '89 the parking brake worked just fine, but it nonetheless had the sag evident in the parking brake cable under the driver's door only when the parking brake wasn't engaged. Never got around to addressing it.

Ronnie
I wonder if cables dragging are the result of the parking brake not being used. The piston in the brake caliper is supposed to automatically adjust out when the parking brake is used to keep the slack out of the cable. Barney explains it very well here:How To Retract The Rear Brake Caliper Piston*-*ReattaOwner.com
